hello captains, i just bought this ship and need your input as to the captain skills and which equipment mods to install.  i don't have any other japanese cruisers so am relatively unfamiliar with their playstyle.  thanks very much!

1. BoS

2. EM

3. Vigilance

4. DE

5. CE

As for the modules, get the one that improves your rudder shift by 20%, and the concealment module. Nothing else matter that much.

Wait what?

"i don't have any other japanese cruisers so am relatively unfamiliar with their playstyle"

You serious? You mean to say you have no experience at T8 and just bought into it? I am sorry for you. You will be an XP piñata.

If this is indeed the case, I suggest you dock the ship for a while and become familiar with high tier play. You should not be in a T8 Premium (Atago, Tirpitz, Prinz Eugen, whatever) especially a CA, until you are familiar with the tier and have played at least 40 battles in a normal-tree ship of the type at the tier (in this case heavy cruisers). Trust me.

Agreed, T8 will be rough. The ships and players are really good and the Atago will be food for any battleships.

Exactly.  At least get a feel for the Furutaka/Aoba/Myoko before you go get blasted at high tiers.  IJN cruisers have their own unique playstyle, so it's better to take baby steps and learn them before you dive right into the deep end of the pool.

I made the mistake of buying Atago when I was a completely green brand new player. Good times were had by not me. :D

The biggest things to remember about playing Atago as as follows:
Your citadel is enormous. Never give your broadside to anything that can penetrate your armor.
Your torpedoes have great firing arcs and good range. Learn to get torp launches off both on the approach and on the retreat.

You can heal like a battleship. Don't forget that. Withdraw if you're low on HP, support from range or as an AA platform while you heal.

Learn to use islands for cover from battleships looking to plunder your citadel, especially for ambush torpedo attacks.

For the love of god don't show your broadside! If you have to turn around and retreat, do it while the enemy is reloading.

Seriously, the first rule of Atago Club is your citadel is /HUGE/ and delicious to all enemy battleships.

Meh... the Atago is pretty easy to pick up.  I got it as a gift when I was around tier five and have done pretty well in it.

cool so there was only about three helpful replies out of all of them.  I said I was new to Japanese cruisers, not the game itself.  I appreciate the tips and happy sailing to all.  :izmena:

As stated above, IMO to fully enjoy the Atago you need a 15 point captain with CE, which brings your concealment to 9.1km I believe. Then you can control your engagements and manage citadel exposure way better. The HE is really powerful and I would recommend you keep track of the enemies that have used damage control so you can keep them lit and net lots of fire damage. Keep in mind, however, that the Atago's 203s have good AP damage as well and broadside CAs (even BBs if the range is right) will suffer if you can hit those citadels. I just got my 16th point and currently using Expert Loader loader skill to surprise enemy CAs with AP out of concealment, with great results so far. Finally, don't forget to use those torps - the firing ark does not get better than that.

Personally I bought Atago recently because I just had to have her, but aside from a test drive in Co-op I haven't played her and don't plan to until I have CA experience.

You need a 15 point captain to use the Atago effectively;

Commander skills:

Basics of survivability(BFT is useless for the atago because of her AA, using this skill won't help you that much)

Expert marksman(or Incoming fire alert if you have poor spatial awareness like me T.T)

Superintendent(more heals YAY!, if you have an 18 point capt. vigilance is good as well)

Demolition Expert(is a must for more fires!!!)

Concealment Expert(Combined with concealment module, so you can control your engagements and will be able to stealth torps as well at 9.1km)

Modules:

Main Armaments mod1

Aiming Systems mod1

Steering gears mod1(you will find that your steering gear will get knocked out often or it is just me...)

Steering gears mod2(faster rudder shift)

Concealment System mod1(combined with concealment expert for maximum effectiveness!)

I would suggest that you should get up to the myokou and familiarize yourself with the ijn CA playstyle.

I hope this helps!

So, using it to top off other captains not optimal then?

I still think it is worthy. The issue is that without a 15 point captain you will not experience the full potential of the ship due to the lack of the 9.1km concealment. When I unlocked the Mogami I did not have a 15 point captain and was having a hard time adapting to it. I used the Atago to reach level 15 and my Mogami gameplay improved a lot.

Hm.  Thanks for the heads up.  Was thinking of getting Atago to top off my BB captains and a couple of CA captains but it may not be a good idea.

I made the same mistake at tier 3. I was a detriment to my team, and quite honestly I put it in mothballs for awhile. But, I'm getting better with it - it's one heck of a learning curve, and I still make mistakes with it from time to time. But every once in awhile I get in the groove. I can't add anything to the above, because it's good advice; this is more of a commiseration post.

Tier 8 is WAY different to someone who spends most of their games in tier 4/5. I learned this the hard way.

That aside, the Atago is one schmexeh lookin' boat, for certain. Aesthetics alone made me buy her, TBH.
