Some Kongo Help

So, I'm a US battleship player, and 2 days ago I unlocked missions and saw the mission for the ARP Hiei. I quickly began grinding and won her yesterday, but even after a couple battles I'm still struggling to make much use of her, as much as I want to. I simply keep taking massive citadel damage right at the start of battles, don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm trying to angle the armor and everything, but unless I literally at a direct 90-degree angle to my enemy I get destroyed, and at that angle I can only use 2 turrets and I don't do much damage. So far this ship seems to be inferior in every possible way to my New York, less damage even with all turrets and less armor, the speed bonus is nice but is of little effect, and honestly all its causing is me getting way ahead of my team and crashing into islands. Is the Kongo just not a good ship? Or what am I doing wrong?

if your ahead of your team at the start of the match, your doing it wrong. Ignore all the whiny BB sniper fools that will be here soon, at the start, stay back, you got 20km+ range. Use it..... and when your team is moving up, move with them. Stay angled so that you can only fire 2 turrets, and rotates just enough to fire all 4 right before you fire, then rotate back hiding the back 2( say 75-80 degree range... 75 is what I angle I think.)

Kongo is a good ship, but since you're so used to the USN BBs, that might be why.

 

Kongo-class ships in WoWs are really fast, 30 knts, so don't get ahead unless you have cruiser/DD/BB support.

 

You support, do not push at the front, but rather at mid. Use your extreme range to hit players at mid range.

You nuke enemy cruisers and burn/citadel broadside Tier 5/6 BBs.

You need to abuse the 21 km main battery range. That mean staying at the rear at a range where you know enemy boats can't hit you. If you're within 15 km range of enemy BB then you're losing your greatest advantage.

 

Hitting things at that range might be a challenge so you can stray to within 16-18 km range but any closer and most tier 4-7 BB can strike you so just be aware of that.

 

Kongo is also very fast so you can chase enemy BB or alternatively run away and get to a safe range.

 

As always don't forget to always avoid showing your broadside to enemy. You can point all 8 guns at enemy at a pretty sharp angle so you don't need to show your broadside the way a Kaiser would have to in order to fire all armaments.

Kongo is like a big oversized cruiser with terrible shell dispersion and slower reload, stay back, go ahead and snipe or push forward, as long as you have others going with you for support.  Other than the terrible dispersion, Kongo is fun, I kept her and got rid of my others of the same tier.  Good luck with it! :)

Even with all the help I can't do very well, I just keep taking citadel hits and take way too much damage, I've got t4 ships managing to score citadel hits....

I also do very terrible damage at long range, on average 1k-2k damage at anything above 16km.

kongou is the worst damn bb in the game, if i was you i would just turn off the apr port and forget all about that turd of a ship. wargaming needs to get smart and remove the ship from the game and put in a real ship or bring her down to tier 3 were she belongs

huh i dont get you. were am i baiting people ? its the worst damn ship in the game and should be removed. replace it with a real ship like ise class and be done with that worthless pile of garbage. a damn kawachi is a better bb then that turd of a ship and shes considered the worst tier 3 bb in the game. so why is it a tier 3 bb with no range can outshine a turd ship like the worthless kongou ? the kongou is the biggest liabilaty at that tier. You know you will lose the match when your team has a bunch of kongous and the other side has new yorks or even wyoming and south carolinas eat kongous for breakfeast.

No idea why you could use Kongo over 1800 matches if you hate her so much.

tbh, I would like to face New York, Wyoming and South Carolina in my Kongo 24/7. She is that good! I do hope she can get more or less as accurate as Nagato at range tho.

Uh..... OK? Have you ever considered the fact that you just don't know how to play the ship? I agree that it's not as good as some people like to believe it is, but it is nowhere near as bad as you think it is.

Anyways, in response to the OP: 

Tips for playing the Kongo: 

-Don't get too close to other BBs, because your slow turret traverse and weakish armour will give you a disadvantage. I usually stay around at 15km, where i can reliably hit things while using my superior speed to dodge incoming shells.

-Don't go broadside. I've been citadeled in this ship at pretty much all ranges.

-Don't aim too high. Since you only have 8 guns, you need to make every salvo count by dealing out citadel hits. If you aim too high, you will get only overpens and regular pens, but no cits.

oh i know the ship very good mind you, and with that i can tell you how much of a pos the ship is thank you very much. the only reason i even play it is cause i have a kongou skin of kancolle and i like that kongou. that is the only reason i put up with the utter garbage that is kongou of this game.

The Kongo and ARP Kongo ships are definitely hit or miss due to their shell dispersion. I was playing my two ARP Kongos yesterday and swear I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn even though my aim was fine. Dispersion, RNG and the other ships camo was NOT in my favor. My best damage was 50K in one match. But the ships were free and I'll continue to play them in random and co-op battles.Even did some upgrades on them. One with less dispersion on the guns and the other with more AA. I sold my regular Kongo after getting the Fuso which I like much more.Much better guns and armor.

I like Kongo and her ARP sisters quite a lot.  The guns are respectable though wonky at times.  I can get them to work more often than not.

 

But with the MM changes of 0.5.12, the important thing to me though, is the speed.  Kongo and her ARP sisters have the speed to not get run down so easily when they get to see Tier VII Scharnhorst and Gneisenau.  As a Scharnhorst owner, those slow 21kt or so BBs at Tier V are Roadkill.  New York, Texas, Konig... They're all Roadkill for Scharnhorst to scoop up.

 

Kongo however has the speed to not get overtaken so easily like those slow BBs.  She has the speed, range, and good enough guns to make it a fight when facing those VII's.  IMO, Kongo is the one Tier V BB best able to adapt to the Tier VII matches which she realistically can expect to happen.

I honestly cannot stand playing this ship anymore. The game has beaten me down so much in the Kongo that I've almost lost my will to continue playing it. I'm about 7 or 8 battles into the Kongo, and not a single one of those battles was a victory. Even the ones I did well in are defeats. I don't know if I even want to continue down the Japanese BB line.

make that 9 losses. I can't do this ship anymore. It's actually has been stressing me out with how crap my experience is with this ship. Combined with the fact that this ship is supposedly a "fun ship", it's all just left a sour taste in my mouth. I'm sure if I kept at it, i COULD win at least one battle, but, at this point, I'm going to other ships for my WoWS fun.

I don't even know what I'm doing wrong. I did pretty alright in the ARP Hiei, and even had a lot of fun in it, so I don't know what's going wrong here with the standard ship.

I had to look up your stats because I had a feeling you were fairly new to BBs.  I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but you are still new to BB play.  You are facing similar issues with your other Tier V BBs, not just Kongo.

 

What do I recommend?  Pick one BB line and stick with it at your current Tier V until you get better, then progress down that line, down to Tier X if need be.  The reason I say that is this:  The 3 BB lines behave, sail, and shoot differently.  On top of your experience with BBs in general, you're not going to easily pick up good habits from focused play.  Pick a BB line, stick with it, learn the style, and go down the line.  They have little quirks as a line you pick up and adopt.  Jumping between 3 different lines isn't going to help that.

 

Later on when you've gotten much higher, gotten confident in your BB play, dive into the other BB lines and apply that experience.  There is still a readjustment, because those USN guns do not behave like those IJN ones being one example.

 

I do not suggest going past Tier V until you get better at it.  You will face only tougher and tougher ships sailed by players that at higher tiers, know a thing or two on how to use those ships.  Work out your experience at Tier V.  Work out your experience with Kongo, because you sailing in a Stock Tier VI Fuso facing off against Tier VIII Amagi, North Carolina, Bismarck, Tirpitz who are being used by players used to high tier play isn't going to be good for you.
