I would love to see any one of these Fletcher class DDs as a premium, in honor of those who fought in the Battle off Samar at Leyte Gulf. I know that WoWs normally does not do Tier IX Premiums, but these three catch anyone's respect when you read the history about it. My personal favorite of the entire class is DD557 USS Johnston, Commander Ernest Evans, commanding. Anybody agree with this?

If a fletcher premium ever happens, it'll either be a fletcher with less guns/worse torps at tier 8 or a reward ship of some sort at tier 9.

Personally, I'd love to see a tier 5 USS Samuel B Roberts filling in a destroyer roll. Give her good torps and great concealment, and she could easily be placed amongst the IJN DDs at that tier.

Make it a camo you can buy that also changes its name?  

 

Also, the Lo Yang was one of Taiwan's Bensons... but interestingly enough Taiwan eventually acquired Gearings and renamed them to the "Yang" line.  Chao Yang I think was one of them.  

Can you imagine Gearings with Hydro?  

They also had a few Japanese ships, such as the Minekaze line, Yukikaze, also renamed to something.  And modernized.  

 

I would love to get some more modern Yangs.

As interesting as this idea is, how do we choose, and where do we draw a line? 

I would totally buy the USS Northampton and the Fletcher-class USS Bell, because my Dad served on these ships. And they both have extremely distinguished war records.  But, that doesn't really justify having them as premiums does it?

 

Premiums ships are supposed to give certain gameplay benefits to owning them, and flooding the premium lists with "noteworthy historical ships" just waters down the meaning of buying a premium.

A base Fletcher is about the same as a fully upgraded benson so it could be a tier 8... I would just like them to model the square bridge Fletchers.

Hate to say it, but a T8 Fletcher would be doing these ships - and much more importantly their crews - a disservice.  If some sort of reward ship system is implemented in the future, then maybe.  Perhaps as a premium camo for the Fletcher instead?  

 

As a former FFG sailor, I'd love to see Sammy B in the game... except for that whole 24kt speed bit.  I understand she recorded 28 in her final engagement, but that's not much better and if she'd survived the battle, her propulsion systems would have been done.

There are still 3 existing Fletchers around. One of which is the USS Kidd (DD-661) is one, happens to be the only US ship that was authorized to fly the Jolly Rodger. I mention this because WG seems to like to make premium ships that still exist - when they can.

Only problem is her speed.  She could about get run down by a US BB, let alone the cruisers of that tier.

Only due to WG's not always the greatest policies creating difficulties.

 

Because of these not-so-great policies, there is never going to be a situation where one is a separate ship, and yet everyone has a chance to get one. I personally would predict one as a possible alternate Ranked Battle or (when they get around to it)Clan Wars prize.

 

A Personal Mission campaign(like in WoT, but implemented better) might also be a better place for one of them to fit in as a reward.

 

Also, speaking of Ranked Battles, I would really like to see ships given to the people who did really really well, but due to teams and things didn't get to or even worse, stay at Rank 1.

 

It's really not all that fair to only reward the best of the best of the best of the best.

Put the Samuel B in as a lower tier DD.  GIven that it was a DE, and there is already a precedent for mixing classes (Tachibana, Scharnhorst) by compensating with lower tier.  with only 2 x 5 inch guns and a single triple torpedo launcher, it would need something special to compete even in low tier matches.  Toss her an odd special ability like repair party, or the IJN rapid torpedo reload.  Alternatively, do the same as Tachibana where it's guns have incredibly fast reload speed.  I'm a big fan of the latter option.  It would be a respectful nod to Paul Carr who died trying to load the last 5 inch shell left on the ship, despite his own guts leaking out.  As much as I would throw money at WG for the USS Johnston (my favorite of the group), premium Fletcher-class DDs would muck up balance something awful in the current state of the game.  I don't see the harm in doing Taffy 3 some justice for driving back the most powerful surface fleet ever assembled though.  Give us the Sammy B, the little little fella that fought like a battleship.

stock hull fletcher  without the   module3  would be basically a  upgraded benson with slight better ranged gun.      it would work as t8 premium DD. (better gun range being the bonus)

 

samb would be tier 2   like tachibana.    2x5" gun that is 12-15rof   would be plenty  strong in t2.  triple torp can be balanced with reload speed.       would be kinda fun ship.

Next it should have an improved rudder, obviously because the ship had to dodge a lot of incoming fire. Third, it should be able to equip the Fletcher Premium Camo for free and in addition to xp bonuses that camo should include a 50% captain xp increase. Finally, to compensate for its advantages, its AA capability should be reduced. It's consumables however should be Speed Boost, Smoke Screen, Speed Boost, and Defensive Fire.

I totally agree with the loadout you propose because when I do move up to a Fletcher, that wil be the configuration I am aiming for.

The problem with this is that the Johnston is a specific, historical ship and since she wasn't commissioned until late 1943, she only ever carried the mid/late war AA configuration -- what is the Fletcher "B" hull in-game -- 5 x 2 40mm, 7 x 1 20mm.  So if you want to nerf her AA, either the in-game graphic model won't match the historical ship, or she'll have dummy AA guns on her deck that don't shoot.

   I absolutely, totally, wholeheartedly agree. From Wikipedia: The day Johnston was commissioned, Cmdr. Evans made a speech to the crew, quoting a phrase attributed to John Paul Jones: "This is going to be a fighting ship. I intend to go in harm's way, and anyone who doesn't want to go along had better get off right now."

  What else can possibly be said? If any ship of this time frame ever deserved to be a premium in this game...

With a specific paint job for it alone.. Adds 14% dispersion to shots on it (rather than the normal 7%), but also expands the detection range, rather than shrink it.. Say 7km with commander skill, and module?
