The Yorck has come a lot way since she was first released. I remember everyone complaining about how bad of a ship it was, but I quite enjoyed my time in it.

that's because it had turrets slower than Yamato or Warspite... what was it.. 180d/51s?

"Two torpedoes fired by land-based torpedo batteries struck the ship, causing serious damage. A major fire broke out aboard Blücher, which could not be contained. After a magazine explosion, the ship sank, with major loss of life. The wreck remains on the bottom of the Oslofjord."

From the Wikipedia page on the Blucher ( Apologies if this is a different Blucher than the one mentioned in the link above.)

But that sentence piqued my curiosity. DEFENSIVE LAND BASED TORPEDO BATTERIES?!? WG has done the artillery coastal battery, I wonder if they'd ever do torpedo batteries?

Don't everyone yell at me at once! Take a number... form an orderly queue.

Something like that. I didn't work too speedily up the German line, having only finished the Yorck like...day before yesterday. I recall people complaining about slow turrets and slow shell velocity, in addition to the usual tier 7 cruiser squishiness. But, a quick rudder and accurate guns made for quite the enjoyable time. I had many games over 100k damage, and my average was around 43k if memory serves.

It was more of a napkin drawing called Entwurf I/10 after WW1. Several ideas were thrown out there, including coastal defense ships, monitors and such. I/10 was maybe the most conventional design study. Eventually these considerations led to the construction of the "Deutschland" class cruisers.

Yorck was a terrible ship when the line premiered; she's been buffed a few times and is quite good these days.

Then I must be doing things wrong. I'm finding it to be worse than Nurn or K-Berg. I either can't hit crap at range or I get teamed up on immediately.

Wrong Blucher. The Blucher mentioned as being the source of the guns for Yorck is the armored cruiser SMS Blucher, a unique ship designed by the Imperial German Navy to fight the Invincible Class battlecruisers. She was based on faulty intelligence though, and was obsolete before being designed. She was later sunk in 1915 (I think 1915 but frankly too lazy to look it up) at the Battle of the Dogger Bank. The Blucher you're referencing here is the heavy cruiser Blucher of the Admiral Hipper class, lost during the invasion of Norway.

The SMS Blucher

http://forum.worldofwarships.com/index.php?/topic/64214-a-detailed-look-at-sms-blucher/

Essentially one can see its like a Kawachi or Nassau with 8.1" guns.

You can see from the pictures, the turrets are identical to the Yorck's.  The slow turret rotation the Yorck had originally came from the historic specifications of the turrets on board the Blucher.

There were spare guns and turrets that were made for the Blucher that ended up being stored somewhere with no other use when the ship sank.  Post war, the idea behind Entwulf 1/10 was to utilize the very same guns and turrets.  Eventually in real life, these guns and turrets were turned into coastal artillery by the Second World War, where a modernized, more aerodynamic HE shell was issued for these guns --- and which shows up in the game being used as the Yorck's HE shell.

The latter no one can really help with; you simply have to learn where it's safe to drive and always have some cover in mind.  I will say that pushing up full speed in a cruiser right at the start of a match at about T7 and up is a bad idea. I almost always troll along at about half speed until I see how the game is shaping up, then decide where I can best contribute.

As for her being worse than Konigsberg and Nurnberg... I agree that she's different, but she's definitely not worse.  She plays more like an IJN cruiser in that her HE is very, very good.  You have to unlearn a bit of what you learned in those two ships when you get to Yorck; your AP is truly only valuable in certain situations (as opposed to being basically the default thing you fire in the other two ships).  She's an adjustment, and definitely takes some getting used to.

What confuses me is that it seems Yorck is more modern design than Hindenburg at tier ten.

mean, 8x 38 cm guns, 33.5t displacement versus 8x 30.5 cm guns and 26.6t displacement.  Am I working from the wrong schematics?

That's not even looking at Hipper at 8x 20.3 cm guns and 16.1t displacement (though much more modern) or Roon...which seems to predate both Yorck and Hindenburg as well as Hipper.

you are looking at way wrong schematics. For one thing, the Hindenburg you mention is the battle cruiser of the Imperial German Navy. You've also got the wrong Yorck, and wrong Roon too for that matter. If you try to Wikipedia these ships you get the wrong result because they weren't built historically but share the names of other ships that were.

Use some common sense though. 30.5cm guns are 12" guns. What caliber does Hindenburg have in game? 20.3cm guns, or 8". Clearly something isn't agreeing there which should indicate you've found the wrong ship.

Right.

In the German cruiser line, Yorck, Roon, and Hindenburg are all "paper ships"; that is, they are extensions of the way designs were heading in their respective eras and may be loosely based on a set of drawings or statistics in the Bundesarchiv, but they were certainly never built.  Yorck's main battery is 4x2 210mm guns, while Roon's is 3x3 203mm and Hindenburg's is 4x3 203mm.  Yorck has the biggest guns of any cruiser in the German line.

The thing that sucks about paperships is you cant find any good pics online. Makes it hard to do a good banner 8P
