Not just popping smoke at random but laying it down when it really matters. So i have to say that i really appreciate all you captains that are keeping an eye out for situations when you really help out BB's like myself. I went back and checked out my 37 matches in the N.C which i won 75% of over last weekend and they all told the same story. Smoke screens and more smoke screens that i and team mates were able to stop in and pick apart the enemy. So keep up the good work I really hope to see more of the same this weekend. This is also true for when you're already down two BBs and you need them to kill radar cruisers. That's the mindset there.

Drop a US smoke on them and then go scout so they can shoot from it while screening torps. It's the best way to play solo.

85 Zhadum101 Beta Testers 471 posts 5,902 battles Report post #8 Posted September 9, 2016 There was a time when I stopped doing it because in a day 10, saying it again 10 BB pilots ignored the smoke..... However when I drive my Kharb I now drop smoke for them, because I don't need the smoke. Also now in my Gearing, when it is all KM BB and cruisers in the way.... I can't go in because they hit the "Hydro, Radar" I win button. I just stay back torp enemy and smoke for my friendly ships. ****Honestly with how USN DD was nerfed (Nerfed by others getting buffs) and these upcoming IJN changes... USN will be dead last in the DD power scale. RU DD are currently best as no DD nerfs (other class buffs "Hydro, Radar") affect them. As they engage at High Tier outside 12km. The key being....then go scout...can't tell you how many times I've had a DD pop smoke in-front of me just to then sail behind me which makes me blind to enemy ships and torps....I hate that...but I've digressed because dropping smoke and screening is a huge advantage! As they engage at High Tier outside 12km. That's why they are doing as well as they are in the high tier. They aren't afflicted with the Radar and Hydro bombs like the other stealth/torp DDs that have shorter viable gun ranges are. You HAVE to be in Radar range for a USN DD to get meaningful accuracy. Quite punishing to get caught by Radar and if a couple KM BBs get together and swap Hydro clicks it's wicked strong defense. Good thing most people still haven't figured out how to use teamplay. Yeah that sucks. You have to realize you're blinding them and they need early warnings on the inevitable torps that will go through that smoke. If you commit to helping a BB then you need to stick it out.

They fired, I scouted. Worked like a charm. As long as a BB is willing to stick around in the fight, I'm willing to do whatever I can to support them, even if my ship sin't best at knife-fights. It's actually better for a DD to move laterally to get those spots to keep his concealment.
359 GUNSTAR_THE_LEGEND Members 1,651 posts 20,692 battles Report post #18 Posted September 9, 2016 Well there is always that possibility that when you in a BB and you are in a smoke screen you might eat some torps. But if you sitting there in such as way as to just take one on the nose then the advantages i feel outweigh the risk. You have to use it and position yourself in it the right way as a BB. As long as i see DD's laying down cover for me ill keep taking advantage of it

And usually done very tastefully so I can still target enemies. especially when those targets are thinking it is a DD sitting in that smoke and sail to close. When the big shells start flying out of the smoke you can see the panic set in at an alarming rate. Edited September 9, 2016 by GUNSTAR_THE_LEGEND

I wish more big ship captains can recognize us DD's doing this and take advantage of it. Not just BB's and CA's. I once try to lay down smoke for a CV under attack but she just sailed on and kept taking fire. Luckily I was able to take out the CL chasing her. But IJN DD smoke sucks. Good point. But I only lay smoke for big ships near me in distress. And I don't camp. So the big ships I am helping are not camping either.

I would usually provide smoke cover for any BBs or Cruisers that likes to push straight up to closer positions with me instead of those turning sideways or backward from their spawn point 15km away lol. Then again, messing around in lower tier yolo queue recently reminded me that many people still...: 1) See your smokescreen and turn away from it. 2) Goes in the smokescreen and just keep on driving straight out of it. 3) What's that sketchy grey smoke ahead? ...Which instead lead me to use smokescreen for myself more often unless there was some sort of communications in chat or playing high tier games. So the big ships I am helping are not camping either. Key for a BB in distress that gets smoke cover is slow down wait to drop out of visibility. Use the smoke to make your turn while getting off a good well placed shot. Do not stop in this instance smoke is not forever and you will still get targeted if you wait around to long. This is a BB'S chance to re position there ship in a way where they can fight back without risking a broadside hit.
