Did I play this right?

I played this game some days ago and got called some things by the player who killed me.

I didn't have time to explain all my reasons in the video (short video).

But here they are:

- I went all around the map without being detected in my tier VII Japanese destroyer.

- I spot the enemy carrier and lunch some torpedoes but realize they will never hit so I close the range.

- As I close I pay attention to the minimap and I don't see any cruisers or destroyers nearby, only some battleships around 10 km out.

- Because of this and where the carrier is likely to run to (away from me) hitting him with torpedoes doesn't seem likely.

- So when I get close enough to get detected I start using my guns.

- I lunched torps at one of the battleships I could see (also in the video).

- But then I took one dive bomber hit and got detonated.

Should I have stayed undetected in this situation?

On my opinion? No. CV hunting is rarely worth the time you remove an allied ship from surface fleet actions. That time was better spent ruining BBs day by torping them and forcing them to stay back so your team can take better positions.

IMHO, opening up with your guns was not a bad decision, especially since there weren't other ships nearby whose guns could present a problem for you.  Also, you can never play the game in a manner of being worried about a detonation, because in that case no one would ever do anything.  Also by firing you can try to set him on fire and thus disrupt his flight operations.

Things to think about for the next match.

1) flying the Juliet Charlie (100% reduction to risk of detonation) flag

2) why were you that far south at that point in the match?  Were you actually on a CV hunt?  If so, I don't think that's a good strategy because as a DD you have many different responsibilities and spotting enemy ships and torps for your team is a big one that you really can't do when on a snipe hunt.

I learned that CV hunting with an IJN DD starting at about tier 6 was largely a waste of time because the CV's starting at tier 6 are fast enough that if they run away from you, you'll just about never get any torp hits on them.

So:

For IJN DD's it's better to hang around where you'd expect to see BB's.  And if you do want to go CV hunting at tier 6+, do it in a gunboat DD.

There are other more pressing targets. As also said, detonations happen. Just ignore them, collect your flags to avoid them in 10 battles and move on.

I would have done exactly what you did in that situation with any type of DD because you are forcing his attention off of your teammates and engaging him in what normally (detonation isn't normal) would be a waste of his offensive resources against you. How you got there is the question and, like others above stated, if you were specifically hunting for the CV that would've been a bad call IMHO.

But your torps were not in vain. Good effort, bad RNG...

1) I have never used a single flag in all the time I have been playing (and yes I know it is stupid).

2) In the beginning I went down the Western side of the map and lunched torpedoes at some enemy battleships and cruisers, but they basically all started running away. From then on I never had any good targets, they were basically all running away from me. I was basically trying to get in front of those running battleships, when I noticed that enemy planes were returning to that area. That made me decide to try and find the carrier, but as you saw, I took the opportunity to lunch torps at the battleships before I was sunk.

With a BB less than 8km away, I probably would have held my fire until lit unless the BB's guns were pointed in the opposite direction.

I agree with CV hunting generally being a poor decision, but I'd need to see the whole match to know for sure.  Your team was up significantly on points and didn't necessarily need you at that point.

We ended up losing the match, but I finished first on experience earned. :(

You seem to lunch on a lot of torps, I hope you have a good dentist...personally I prefer a good sandwich for lunch

My advise is keep CV hunting in lower tiers.  You won't make it back to me in my CV .  I will focus you down and keep you lit till a teammate blows you out of the water.  Then again I only have a Saipan atm.

I don't think that CV hunting is inherently a bad decision.  It is a bad decision when you have far too many team mates chasing after a single CV at the expense of all the other enemies and mission objectives, which usually ends up in a loss.  Of course, part of the problem here is that too many players are just too greedy and all want a piece of the action rather than thinking of the team and ITS mission objectives.

Also, as I said above, from about tier 6 and above, chasing CV's with IJN DD's is usually a waste.  The CV's are often at least  as fast as you are, so your torpedoes will rarely ever catch an enemy CV in a stern chase, assuming they don't just dodge them anyways.  In my experience, from tier 6 and above, USN and VMF DD's are better CV hunters because they can gun them down with much greater ease than an IJN DD can torp a CV on the run.
