60 ikeystonei Members 319 posts 5,590 battles Report post #1 Posted September 9, 2016 I was fortunate enough to finish the Ashigara Challenge this evening........ Haven't played the Japanese Cruiser line beyond Tier III, so am really a loss as to playing the ship. Going to play several games in Coop to get accustomed to it, but would the well-versed forum members care to offer suggestions?

Beware of the bad traverse and plan ahead, also lead a bit because the shells travel slowly. Ignore the torps most of the time unless you want to turn to mush because you have to expose your sides to fire them. 537 [KNTAI] Battlecruiser_Amagi [KNTAI] Members 3,134 posts 9,120 battles Report post #3 Posted September 9, 2016 Use HE, get those fires roaring . Only use AP against broadsiding cruisers less than 14 km away. Use the WASD keys to avoid lots of shells. You'll do fine.

Your torpedoes have a 10 km range, travel at over 60 knots, and you have more of them on your ship than the Hatsuharu. Do remember to use them. AP on cruisers is fine because of IJN shell arcs. Use your decent concealment as a weapon. Basically, just focus on HE spamming everything to death, juking and jiving to avoid enemy fire, using torpedoes if an opportune moment arises. There's not much else to the Myoko gameplay than that, you will pass most of your time just trying to not get citadeled anyways. But that HE hit like a truck, you can get some 9K salvos on BBs at max range...+2 fires. Torpedoes are good, use them when needed them arcs are horrendous though... I would say "use them when you are not detected", despite the angle for firing them being terrible Myoko doesn't turn fast, even with upgrades. Don't forget that "opportune moment for torpedoes" means "one where you can expose your entire broadside without getting rekt for it", because you can only shoot torpedoes at things that are behind you (the arc basically begins 90 degrees out from the middle of your ship). 179 [HAIFU] MagentaTears -Members- 702 posts 7,365 battles Report post #10 Posted September 9, 2016 As mentioned above, use high explosive as your primary ammo. IJN cruisers tier 5-9 have 17% fire chance which can be boosted up to 20% with demolition expert. Myoukou's armour is week so always stay moving and turning especially when shells are coming at you. Try not to move up further than your team currently is. The torpedoes are probably best used when you are not spotted or when you are retreating because the arcs are quite bad. 100 DeMatt Beta Testers 365 posts 12,391 battles Report post #12 Posted September 9, 2016 Of the ships you've played, the ARP Ashigara is probably most like the Pensacola. The major differences are the weaker secondary and AA armament, the slower turret rotation (and awkward C turret placement), and the butt-pedoes. From that ship, you've probably learned that you do not want to be the lead ship. The same applies to the Ashigara. However, her great speed makes it very easy to outpace your teammates. Always be prepared to turn and run. HE spam is probably your best ammunition choice, but don't neglect the AP when a cruiser gives you her broadside. LWM's review of the ARP Myoko is a bit dated, but probably still valid, so there's some further reading.

In Myoko and now in Ashigara, my best games have been while running away... Perfect for firing those aft torps.
