Ok guys time for another one. As I've been now diving into Jeep carriers, i decided this would be next and IMHO would be a great tier 4 carrier along side Langely for a second USN CV line.

Long Island was the first Escort Carrier in USN Service and was a test bed for the feasibility of turning converted merchant ships into carriers. She was laid down July of 1939 and launched July of 1940. She was instrumental in gathering data that would later lead to the "baby" flattops operations in the war. She was used for pilot qualifications and when the war broke out was used to move planes from the rear to forward areas.

Infact she was the reason why Guadalcanal's Henderson Field got it's planes and kept planes at all times.   She would be used as a plane ferry for most of the war. After the war she'd be used for Operation "Magic Carpet" returning American Military men back home. Afterwards she'd be returned to merchant service and turned into a transport liner for about 10 years before being activated in 1954 and turned into a helcopter ASW carrier.  She'd continue in this roll till 1967 where she was finally retired, then stricken from the list and sold for scrap in 1968.

Well that's enough on the History, lets dive into the specifics.

Displacement: 13,500 tons, that puts her around 6,000 tons less than the 33,300 HP Langely. So her HP would be significantly less probably around the 26,000 HP mark.

Size: 492 feet long, just under 70 feet wide. So she's TINY.  A very small ship.

Speed: 16.5 knots max speed. So she's slightly faster than Langely is, and with her size probably has a much tighter turn radius.

Armaments: 1 127mm/51 caliber gun, 2 76mm/50 caliber guns.  So AA is basically non-existent.

Plane Capacity: 21.  Slightly less than Langely, not surprising considering her size.

Final thoughts:

So what we have in Long Island is a smaller, slightly more nimble carrier with slightly less capacity than Langley, and well she is way less in tonnage so less HP. But a prime tier 4 candidate if I ever saw one.

chances are WG will make the Big E a reward ship. Lets just hope they do her justice and allow her to have a decent planes config.!:amazed:
