Read the book Confident hope of a Miracle, its about the armada and is darn well written, it really does show that although the British didn't sink many Spaniards, it really was a curb stomp. The Spanish were outgunned, out manouvered and out fought for the entire running battle up the channel.

What is commonly forgotten, and barely hinted at in this excellent production, is that Drake was a pirate and a protege of John Hawkins, whose raids and 'commercial activities' in Africa and the Carribean were legendary. Hawkin's subsequent re-design of the Royal Navy, dealing with everything from hull design to logistics support, actualy created the force that would face the Armada, and his tactical expertise earned in his piratical activities paid dividends as Drake used them against the Spanish.
