I feel betrayed by the gutting of the IJN DD class, and that I've wasted my time and money

For the past year I played IJN DD, I didn't want to be a US or Russian DD with good guns and short range torps. I was fine being a fragile ship, with subpar guns but

great torps.

So now wargaming will turn IJN destroyers into general purpose ships. Basically inferior US destroyers or mediocre mini cruisers.

It's like world of warcraft where they nerfed the one thing that mages had that could kill a Warrior, and it made the class basically useless.

  • All the time I spent to get to tier 8 is now wasted (a year)
  • The playstyle I mastered will be no longer viable
  • My highest tier ships robbed of the only thing that made them unique

At this point, they might as well rename the game "world of battleships"

... Nope. IJN DDs have been nerfed to hell, but I have no idea what you are talking about in this post.

I have the Shim.  I had to adapt.  I also went back to World of Warcraft and started a Mage.  That game is a joke with the crazy OP healers.  But I live with it.    :hide_turtle:

You will find a ship to enjoy again.  If you don't..  We don't blame you for leaving.  Don't let WG tell you want you have to play.

Apparently he's concerned about the upcoming IJN tree split, and it's consequences to IJN game play...

No idea what the OP is on about, IJN DDs got horribly nerfed when torpedo spotting mechanics were revised.  "The only thing that made them unique?"   Give me a break, USN torpedoes do the job miles better nowadays.

Rage about nothing because, no patch notes have been released yet.  Wonderful.

But isn't the split between gunboat and torpboat lines? I thought that was the point.

Can't you just wait until it drops, and decide then?

BTW, classic first post. Welcome to the forums.

I got that, but how does it turn current torp boats into gun boats?

Exactly.  There will still be good torpedo boats in the line, but now with a dose of gunboats too.  A little something for everyone, depending on your play style.

The new line is theorized to be a guns-focused IJN line since Akizuki can't be built any other way (having one quad torp launcher and 4x2 10cm guns will severely limit your options). The existing line has been stated to being repurposed into a general purpose guns-and-torpedoes line instead of just torpedoes or just guns from a WG developer (translated from Russian).

The split might actually bring life back to the IJN DD line, as it was sucked out long ago.

What are you basing any of that on? It is very likely that the changes will be good and you will like them.

I can't be botherd to quote all of you who say you don't know what he's on about, but what he's talking about is this post by Sub_Octavian

Russian Text:

Предполагается, что будет сформировано два типа игрового процесса:

  • Достаточно универсальные корабли, малозаметные, ориентированные как на стрельбу ГК, так и на использование торпед;

Translation Done by IKU19:

It's assumed that two types of playstyle will be made:

  • Sufficiently versatile ships, stealthy and designed to both use main caliber and torpedoes [probably along the lines of multi-purpose, jack-of-all-trades-- think USN DDs]
  • More "artillery" variants with fewer torpedoes (but with wider arcs/faster traverse/faster torpedoes) and access to the reload accelerator [torpedo reload booster consumable, more specialized in artillery but with a torpedo bite-- think VMF DDs]

The current playstyle of "stealth [torpedo] soup" will therefore change. [Expect torpedo nerfs, and artillery buffs]

But this is preliminary information, the branch in the near future will go to supertest. [This information is not final]

ALL IJN DD'S ARE BEING NERFED INTO MULTI-ROLE SHIPS DURING THE TREE SPLIT

You mean, we don't have to waste tons of credits and have a 15-point captain to make them into something viable now?  Torpedo soup is long gone, the reorganization just means the IJN DDs will hopefully get something approaching decent guns as compensation, for at least half of their number.

Yeah. I can't wait to play a tier 6 Fubuki. I hope it will be like Minekaze all over again.

One problem with homogenizing all the DD's into the gunboat mold is that it will be very easy to pick out the best ship and the also-rans. There will be pretty much one way to play the class and the ship with the best guns (Range+ROF+turret traverse) will win ( assume equal captain/player skills). Generally this will be the Russian boat (haven't seen what the Germans/Brits will really bring). The Russians generally win the long range duels and the USN the knife-fights. Where will the IJN fit? Akizuki COULD be a beast but up until then, slight tweaks only make the IJN DDs mediocre gunboats. (up from p1ss-poor gunboats now). The Shimikaze (from what I have read, haven't played one) is a great example. Take away its TT superiority and what does it bring to the party that someone else can't do better.

I can answer that last part.

Shimekaze now has only these options:

1- 20km range torps that everyone can easily dodge as they are seen very far away (2.5km) and are the slowest torps of the tier.

2- 12km torps that have equivalent detection range and damage to the Gearing's (tier 10 USN DD) but are a bit slower. The 12km range prevents the Shimekaze from using it with Torp Acceleration skill as the range becomes so low the ship needs to do a suicide run. Do note Gearing's torpedoes are 16km range and can benefit from Torp Acceleration to bring its range down to 12km.

3- Finally the 8km torps which are fast and do good damage.. but its a 'BAKKA BOMB' setup. You won't survive your first torpedo run.

Gun wise the Shimekaze is HOPELESS against even a tier 6 USN DD. Stealth wise it has the same identical stealth as the tier 10 USN DD Gearing. It has no consumable module options (smoke and engine boost that's its) and it has the worst duration smoke of all nation's DDs. Finally, any IJN DD trained for torpedoes has no points left for guns so even their garbage damage and garbage reload speed guns are also half the range as any USN and Soviet DD.

I agree with OP on this stab in the back at IJN DD players. I do not need to 'wait and see' what WG does because their own dev already confirmed they don't want 'torpedo soup' ... which ironically only applies to IJN because you don't see Gearing (an already better torpedo attack ship than Shimekaze) getting ANY torpedo nerfs.

Plain and simple this is WG doing what it does best: Insert incompetent fixes to a problem that is easy to solve.
