I have a friend who I invited to the game with the invite thingy, but he can't get the Diana after playing several battles. Does it have to be a win? A random battle? A survived battle?

No, it is simply a battle.  My son took advantage of it and worked slick.

 

Was it a new account?  Or one that your friend had not played on for more than 3 months?  If not, that may be the issue.

It was a brand new account. He created it through my personal link for the express purpose of getting the ships and rewards.
