Sooo... about the Bayern's secondaries.

Is it a good idea to build her for her secondaries, despite her top hull losing the majority of them? Or am I better off going for a main battery build instead?

nah, not useful.

Those secondaries are from casemate guns, which really limits their field of fire, meaning you have to go full broadside to get the most out of them.

and even if Bayern is nearly impervious to citadel hits, it sure as hell does eat a ton of penetrations, which can quickly add up.

You should focus on the main guns, because, as bad as they are, they still out do the damage from secondaries.

Nope, she has good secondaries, but the manual secondaries skill only is really effective for tier 7 ships and up. Also, the inaccurate guns of the Bayern lend itself to using the accuracy mod. That said, I have heard the a secondary build on the Bismarck is awesome, so I suppose you could train the captain for that...

I'm stopping at Gneisenau. I'm actually training three different captains.

One for Bayern (Current Captain)

One for Gneisenau (Second Captain)

One for Scharnhorst (Final Captain.)

I have no interest in Bismarck, Tirpitz, Fredrich de Grob, or Grober Kurfurst.

Which is why I asked on the Bayern. All three my captains will be spec'd for secondaries.

I think I'll go for the Main Battery, while I have nothing against Casemate guns (My Nagato's setup for them.), there's just too few of them on her B hull to make it worth it, so I can see myself doing the Main Battery mod instead.

Ja previous comments are richtig...........I don't seem to get close enough to use the secondaries most times. So I stuck with the main gun layout.

1-How would you NOT want the Bizmark after hearing everything about her?

and 2- why would you build a Premium only Capt??

It has been said that having two BB capts is not a bad idea (one for a beastly secondary build, and one for a godly AA build)

Just askin

I don't like her? I've never had an interest in Bismarck. Not when Scharnhorst is a far superior ship in design and naval carrier. If I wanted a ship based entirely on it's reputation, I'd get the Yamato. Which I am already grinding for. There's no need for me to grind for a ship that is known only for getting a lucky hit and proving to the world just how stupid Churchill was for mobilizing the whole British Armada to take down one out-dated design with a modern touch.

Hunter Steel, I'm confused, too. Sounds like you only need 2 captains then, because you could run either of the Bayern or Gneisenau captains on your Scharnhorst. Unless a specific skill will be different in all 3 captain builds I don't see you needing a premium only captain, not unless you actually plan on using that captain later on the Tirpitz or whatever they hopefully replace the T9 and T10 German BBs with.

I can tell you that a Bismarck secondary build is pretty awesome. At least from the receiving end. Not too scary for a DD at 10 km but at 8...

history and realism has nothing to do with this game.. LOL

It is just a fantastic ship, and does some really serious stuff

I did guns for Bayern (a keeper), and have secondary build in Gneisenau, as a stepping stone to Bismarck.

And there's a reason I play the ships I play. Not because of their performance, but because of what they were to me historically.

Bismarck: Overhyped design that proved to the world what an idiot Churchill was.

Scharnhorst: Almost no one knows of her, or her record. Why? Her entire career was buried under Bismarck's hype.

Nagato: I just love her.

Kongou: Longest running career in the IJN Navy during WWII, having served her country since 1915.

Yamato: Most powerful BB, but a gigantic waste of resources for a design that was full of defensive flaws.

Prinz Eugen: Escorted Bismarck, and took two nukes. I just like her.

Tell me again: Why I should sail a ship, I literally have no interest in?

The 150mm guns on the Bayern also fire AP. Only the dual purpose 105mm fire HE. So I would recommend not going secondaries.

My captain on Bayern is only 10 points at the moment. Not sure if I'm going to go BFT+MAA or CE at 15 points. Both have their appeal to me.

I did fine  with secondary build on bayern.     i probably averaged 5k a match in dmg from it.       seems like I get close enough to use it a lot.         I am not a bb main guy, so doing 62k avg 60% survival rate was fine  (with over 120 planes shot down).       too many dang'd CV after me.  :D   good strong ship.   I enjoyed it, and its gun has arc, so I wanted to close within 12km or closer.

the top hull doesn't actually lose a bunch fo guns.

it changes from having a bunch of single mount 88mm guns, to have 6 DOUBLE mount 105mm guns.

It does lose the majority of it's casemate 15.5cm guns.

Well, the stock hull has 12 guns per side, 4-88mm HE and 8-150mm AP. The upgraded hull has 11 per side, 6-105mm HE and 5-150mm AP, and I believe the 105mm guns have a higher rate of fire than the 88mm, so it is still a net increase in firepower.

Personally... and this is only me thinking out loud... build your ship around its main feature - it's main guns. Unless you plan on continuously brawling with it, secondaries should be a secondary (no pun intended) concern.

While always an option, it can be quite the boring one. I'd chalk it up to the secondaries being the main feature of German BBs while the guns are the actual secondaries :D

105 is better because it is HE  and has decent chance to cause fire.    if main gun dispersion is an issue, get closer.  :D  it worked for me.
