2 KierDosSantos Beta Testers 15 posts 1,304 battles Report post #1 Posted September 5, 2016 So, without even realizing it, I've managed to gather around 120k free experience from playing my Scharnhorst and Dunkerque, and so being the wallet warrior skrub lord I am, I kinda have the urge to spend it. I took a look through my research trees and noticed that's exactly enough for me to get the Amagi. That being said, I don't plan to go any further up the Japanese tree, and so the Amagi is really all i want from the Japanese BB line for now. So my question is: Is the Amagi worth it as a ship in general? I know aesthetically, she's an absolutely gorgeous ship, but for an average player, does she hold up in a typical random battle? Or should I just continue to stockpile my free experience and grind out the Amagi through my Nagato?
15 lrdgrd Beta Testers 129 posts 5,846 battles Report post #2 Posted September 5, 2016 I would personally say grind the Nagato!! Tier 7 is in such a sweet spot lately, plus the ship itself is just amazing! I'm barely starting with the Amagi (used to play her a lot on CBT and it was very fun back then), and ive been doing very poorly with her i have to say. Need more games in her again to really be able to comment on her worthiness tho, my comment was more on the Nagato! Hope its useful info nonetheless!

1,662 [CALM] YamatoA150 Beta Testers 6,838 posts 6,088 battles Report post #8 Posted September 5, 2016 Depends on who you ask. Russians say it sucks and needs buffs. NA and EU say it's great and you should get it. It does have some trolltastic armor when sharply angled, like Kongou, but it can also run away and still keep 3 of its turrets on target while running. You have a decently sizes health pool with overall meh maneuverability and bad armor, which means that you just take tons of pen damage from odd angles. I got to Amagi, hated the ship and barely ever play it now. I got to North Carolina and love the ship. Much better armor, maneuverability, AA, and I would say better guns. She is fast, has powerful and numerous guns, decent AAA, and the armor is light, though still quite effective. The secondaries are also quite good.

However the stock grind is pretty punishing so if you do free xp make sure it's to the elite ship not just to the ship.

She puts out one heck of a volley, with 5 2 gun turrets. Edited September 8, 2016 by Rusty_Bucket__

I'd argue it has better armor than the Nagato, that ship just falls apart from both AP and HE shells. In fact, all of the t7 battleships have abysmal protection. The armor on the Amagi is fine, actually being pretty resilient when not taking shots to the broadside. I just don't like the Amagi though, because it's a battleship. Unless you're going yamato to have second best T10 BB I wouldn't bother.
89 [SCCC] AkiraKurai Members 717 posts 23,549 battles Report post #15 Posted September 5, 2016 Amagi has the bow armor similar to North carolinas with side armor and 1 more gun of a Nagato. Combined with it's stupid speed of 30.1 kts and decent traverse speed what you get is a ship with a rofl bounce when you swivel back and forth to unlock your guns and nuking cruisers and BBs left and right. Yeah I think it's OP as long as you can keep a minimal of 15 km away from BBs
3,413 [REVY] Royeaux Members 9,749 posts 7,317 battles Report post #16 Posted September 5, 2016 I'd say the Amagi is one of the best ships, but given that I was driven away from my Tier 8 ships because they kept getting stuck in matches with tier X, I'm going to have to say buyer beware. 5,912 [CNO] Soshi_Sone Members 7,450 posts 23,087 battles Report post #18 Posted September 6, 2016 (edited) Amagi seems to be player specific. Some folks love it and do well in it. Some folks hate it and don't do very well...like me. I still went through the grind with it to get to Izumo. I had a few unicum games with it. The kind where I could post a pic here and show how "bad [edited]" I am. But I have many more "I suck" games with it. In fact, i did poorly with all the T7/T8 BBs. But I'm doing very well with the T9 Iowa. Go figure. Edit: [edited] = Donkey in colloquial English. Edited September 6, 2016 by Soshi_Sone
35 tremor3258 Members 490 posts 4,096 battles Report post #19 Posted September 6, 2016 It's got lots of guns, sweet maneuverability, speed enough to keep the cruisers from getting bored waiting around, and just enough armor to be usable. (The AA's pretty short-range, but if you've reached Amagi, you're used to that on the IJN, and CVs aren't as plentiful as they used to be) Swivel around to get those back-guns in operation, be careful of showing your side. I've found when playing that I have a sweet spot of about 10-14 km to keep the Amagi at where it's very effective.
