how do you guys think combat will roll in this game. longer ranged engagements or more of a brawling feel to it with close range broadsides or a mixture of both.

I have it will be a mix of both with different classes of ships for sure.  Battleships will have the longer ranges but for cruisers and destroyers they won't have that range.

are torpedoes long range weapons? Both launched from ships and aircraft. I would assume that aircraft launched torpedoes would move through the water for shorter distances than ship launched ones.

It comes down to how fast and what range they give them in the game.  I'm sure DD will carry plenty and I'm pretty sure some cruisers did to.  But whether or not they are a viable long range weapon we will have to wait and see.

Did torpedoes have some sort of tracking system in WW2 or was it point or shoot. Im pretty sure it was point or shoot but I want to double check

it seems like they developed some ways to guide torpedoes during WWII

maybe we will see this same development as we advance up the tech trees in WoWS

I think in general the ships will play similar to Arty in WoT.. with an overhead view for long range shots and a third person view with zoom for closer shots.

I'm really curious as to how the Aircraft carriers will work out.

I understand sending up dive bombers and torpedo bombers to attack other ships, but can you send up a CAP to protect your own fleet or attack the other fleet's CAP or incoming planes?

They were basically point and shoot with some assistance before being fired. The TDC (Torpedo Data Computer) was developed that

that could keep track of the firing boat's position, course, and speed.  By using this rudimentary "computer" they could update the torpedo gyro's to help track towards the target with more accuracy than just pointing and shooting in a straight line.  This all happened before the torpedo was launched, once it was fired it used the stored info to "hopefully" hit the target.  Of course early problems with the torpedoes actually detonating were a whole other problem.

This is THE reference about torpedoes.

Initially I hope to see more gunnery. Pre WW2 doctrine was set as big ship battles and the air craft carrier as a support role. That all changed as we all know after Pearl Harbour. So I do hope they kinda follow the doctrine as per the era with the  destroyer screen launching torpedoes to form the direction of battle. The enemy ships doing a turn away in favour the direction you wanted. Classic stuff. I love it

I would be extremely surprised if you couldn't put up a CAP.  I'm sure you can launch a couple squadrons and one of them you could probably set to CAP.  And before people ask that's Combat Air Patrol.

There was the development of acoustic (sound) guided torpedoes at the later stages of the second world war, mainly by the kriegsmarine. The old point and shoot should be valid for most of the tech levels in the game.

REALLY hoping aiming isn't like WoTs as in distance is calculated for you. I really hope they give us a range finder instead, so you have to range your shots first.

Edit: I hope its like Battlestations Pacific

This game really has the potential to bring some "tiered technologies".

For example, radars starting with tier X (let's say 8 for the sake of it).  Radar accuracy increases with tier (from decimetric radar to millimetric radar).  Same goes with torpedoes.  Torpedoes could get some "homing" technology starting with a certain tier.

A consumable that BBs could get could be a spotter plane.  Buying one allows you to light up a square, revealing what's inside.

I'm sure that the developers have already thought about that, with all the pros and cons of such ideas.

I can imagine artillery-style aircraft carriers being pretty annoying.  Imagine arty where not only does your shell tank ages to reload, but it tanks several minutes at least to get to the target.  The situation might completely have changed by then...

I think it will be similar to WOT, but slower.

Destroyers, and light cruisers for that matter, will be the zippz lights while heavier cruisers will be the fast mediums, while battleships would obviously be the heavies. Nothing profound in that, but I suspect a more thinking man's WOT.

I reckon we will see the Destroyers circle jerking battle ships personally, at least the good ones will do that the people who aren't so good will just suicide rush into the enemy Battleships and cry where air support? I joke of course :P.

Possibly.  I think this game will rely even more on teamwork though, which may make public games quite frustrating

Yep!  I might even join a clan again just for that.

The longest range of any us ship launched torpedo was 15,000 yards or about 8.5 miles with the Mark 15, mod 0, 21" torpedo traveling at 26 knots.(could go faster but with smaller distances)

Well, if things turn out i hope they will, DD's will have more to fear from a BB's secondary guns than from the big ones. Remember, BB's are big targets and even then they had problems with hitting eachother from long range. (even though radar and targeting computers helped a lot later on, things like wind did have a lot of influence on where a shell actually landed) So yes, i think if you play a BB you'll play it "arty style" and see most of your shells hit the water instead of your target, especially if its a small, fast moving ship like a destroyer.

On point blank range, it might be a different story for the main guns, but slow tracking of your turrets might become a problem here. Which is why think BB drivers will be glad they spent money and XP on good secondary guns. ;)
