Best Secondary builds per BB tier?

I am very very fond of secondary builds. There is a certain satisfaction in seeing a curtain of lead raining down on those sneaky reds who tried to get too close to you. And I know that I am not the only one.

 

What are the Battleships, in your opinion, that are best secondary build ships in each of their classes?

 

My list is, 

 

Tier II - Mikasa - IJN (duhh)

Tier III - Nassau - German (hands down)

Tier IV - Kaiser - German

Tier V -  Konig - German

Tier VI - Used to be Warspite, but now Bayern has taken it's place

Tier VII - Nagato - IJN

Tier VIII - Bismark (no competition)

Tier IX - Izumo (IJN)

Tier X - Yamato

So you would rate tier VIII Bismark over Tier X Yamato? Brave choice. Very brave!

It's actually pretty good for ITS tier, but for Tier 10 I would have to say Yamato~

  • Secondary builds are nothing special at this tier.

• Bayern.

  • Secondary builds are nothing special at this tier.

• Scharnhorst/Gneisenau.

  • HE secondaries are better than the Nagato's AP secondaries.
  • Nagato lacks the armour for close-quarters brawling, which is required for effective secondary use.
  • Colorado is too slow to make use of secondaries most of the time.
  • Scharn and Gneisenau also get torpedoes for close range brawling.

• Bismarck.

  • Combine it with hydro and you've got a monster cap contester.
  • Throw on manual secondaries and watch as DDs squeal in fright as you charge their smoke with hydro active, secondaries blasting away.

• Izumo

  • Good luck using secondary builds at this tier.

• Yamato

  • Good luck using secondary builds at this tier..

I'd say Bayern is where secondaries start making sense as a strategy unto thy self. I've had quite a few games where I did more than 10K secondary damage. And with knifing between two enemies and seeing the secondaries shoot from both sides is one of the most satisfying feelings. Can't wait to get the Bismarck.

 

Have to disagree with your comment about Izumo/Yamato. At those stages you already have so much main gun firepower that concentrating your modules/captains skills on secondaries and getting a bit close is definitely a viable strategy.

Given the things those 10km secondaries will be shooting at, yes, Bismarck is better than Yamato in terms of her secondary power.

Having played the Yamato with the secondary build, it is very useful at t10. If you know what you're doing it gives you heavy area control as well as a bonus in brawls. Fires will boost your damage as well from the 2ndaries. All in all you get on average a 10% damage boost. 

 

I feel this will be the same for the Biz and I didn't have manual on the Izumo but its 2nds are the same as Yamato's.

German BBs have the best secondary builds in general.  They've even supplanted Nagato at Tier VII for Secondaries.  The only one that still has a, "You better not forget about me, you b!tches" is Yamato.

Secondary build in Izumo and Yamato pay big dividends.  I have killed a decent amount of DDs w Izumo A hull.

I don't get how the Izumo secondaries get worse when it goes form A hull to B. Aren't things supposed to get better when you upgrade?

I'd rate Kürfurst over Yamato for secondaries, they seem to do more damage (I have both, both are secondary build... And Montana too. Which is surprisingly no slouch either with a secondary build.).

You lose some 155mm turrets and gain a bunch of 127mm turrets. That's probably why the rating goes down (even though the smaller guns are better because they shoot HE)

Ah, this thread though is on Secondaries.  Tirpitz has good secondaries but Bismarck's is better for the massive advantage in range.
