So was just thinking the other day, given how the fire prevention skill is basically useless why not replace it with something that could be a little more useful. Specifically in this case I was thinking of a "Safe Stowage" type skill that would reduce chance of detonation by say 15-20%

 

Thoughts on this idea? This isn't meant to be a whine thread on detonations, just trying to come up with a more useful skill that would be potentially worth taking.

That's the one that was 7% reduction? maybe they should increase it to 10-15%?

 

I've been saying the entire tree needs reworking for a while now as there are only a few skills worth using.

Or maybe make the fire prevention skill slightly more useful. If it was buffed to ~15-20%, I can see it being worth the two points on some ships.

Make it useful.  Detonations are still rather rare and we've got modules and flags that can mitigate it further.  With the amount of fire damage in game, no flags, no upgrades to mitigate it, a captain skill that makes it a worthwhile reduction would probably be the better bang for the buck

Or make it additive like demolition expert instead of multiplicative...  at least cancelling the skills out.

 

Example shell, base 10% fire chance. 

Captain shooting it with DE would have a 13%, which is further modified by whatever skills/refits/base chance there is, but we'll count these as none for this example.

Captain receiving the base shell will have a 9.7% chance, receiving a DE captain's shell will have a 12.6% chance.

 

If Fire prevention cancels demolition expert out, then it would be 7% chance for base, 10% chance for DE captain.

Though it might be better if it scaled with fire chance since it would be pretty strong against shells with base 5% chance, eg: USN 5in, while it's still kinda useless against BB caliber shells with 40%+ chance to fire.

Agree that this would be the better way to go.

 

For players to better be able to decide whether the skill is worthwhile, WG needs to start listing the currently undisclosed fire resistance value in port, taking all applicable upgrades, flags, and captain's skills into account.  I seem to recall plans to start listing this stat being mentioned in a Q&A, but can't find it.

Well, there is one flag that gives a 20%(?) reduction to fire duration.

How about replacing it with something we do not have on the tech tree yet but I think everyone of certain ship classes would enjoy. Something that increases top speed by a fixed percentage per nation or class.

 

Say USN BBs get a 5 knot boost but DDs only get a 3 knot boost. I would take this over EM any day.

This would break CO :D

 

Something less drastic, perhaps -- 2.5kts for BBs, 1.5kts for CAs, 1kt for DDs?

Word. They need to just remove the Tiers completely and re-work most of the skills and point values. This way someone just starting the game can get Concealment Expert with a 5 point captain. They'll have to sacrifice other skills but at least you have variety and an actual choice.

Just an idea lol of course it would need to be refined a bit. I think we have enough fire combating capabilities in game. We have a handful of detonation limiting options. But speed boost? Only DDs get that and anyone who can easily farm Sierra Mike (very difficult).
