Sigh I am getting tired of all the Dunkerque bashing. It is really over the top. I would like to clear up some misconceptions and add to the other positive post from Chief:

http://forum.worldofwarships.com/index.php?/topic/91252-yet-another-dunkerque-review-a-counterpoint/

I played about 7 battles last night, mostly conservative trying to survive. Of course I didn't have the time to try different things so very limited experience. Also disclaimer I am terrible BB driver; prefer DDs and cruisers.

First to clear up some misconceptions:

1) Survivability

You heard all the talk about easily citadeled even from front, other BBs eat it for lunch, etc.

Well I only got citadeled once or twice at the very end of a loosing battle while surrounded from all sides. I played a lot of hug an island and face enemies, including Scrhons and Tirpitzes, Fusos of course, etc. I had the new tier 6 german BB (forget the name) go straight for me while I was at the edge defending cap so could only shoot HE. Sure I lost a lot of HPs from AP even facing enemies. However heals seems to recover a lot and for the most part I survived or was the last ship remaining on my team. While I didn't end up at the top 5 all the time I did fire my guns a lot. So I was active while protecting my sides using islands.

The bottom line is, yeah you take some damage but no you are not fragile. Not unless you are dumb enough to challenge BBs and show your side, of course. But that is not ship's fault.

2) Loose a Turret and loose half DPM

Yes that is true. However in all the battles I never once lost a turret. Now could be dumb luck, that is not enough games for sure. Still while facing opponents I never lost a single turret.

3) Secondaries are useless

Since it is a new ship I only had BFT, Of course airplanes a problem and once I lost a lot of HP to torp planes. However I found them very useful when dealing with DDs. One battle I alone went after 2 DDs. Now in most BBs I would run away and simply make as much distance as possible. So initially I went forward using main guns. One DD remained in the cap using the standard HE spam from smoke tactic. However Nicholas charged me. So I fired one salvo then turned around just avoiding his torps. Remember Nicholas lacks range so has to get close and personal to use torps. He got within 3 clicks at which point I was sailing away having almost all secondaries firing at him. Well he didn't last long, maybe 20 seconds. Then I turned back and finished the other DD whose smoke was gone.

I never did anything like this using any other BB!!! I have secondaries build Nagato but it is too slow to turn and has slow turrets. This ship behaves move like a cruiser.

So secondaries are very useful when you turn around and start sailing away. Which is perfectly common situation when a DD is too aggressive. Same goes when running away from torp planes. Once I get AFT and Manual AA control then airplanes will be no issue at all.

Now that is out of the way let's talk about fun. After all it is a game that we play for FUN!!!!

Well I have Tirpitz and some high tier DDs. My God tier X and IX BB play meta is sooooo boooring. I am only pushing IJN line to get Yamato because ... well it is Yamato, duh. But in general BB play is incredibly boring. So much camping in the back, sniping, running away from fight, etc.

So many times I push with Tirpitz only to discover my cruiser escort turned around at the 1st sign of trouble and I am focused into ash.

Well now this ship trades some armor, fair enough, but gains so much! Speed and maneuverability of a cruiser, forward guns for chasing pray, etc. Sure at the start I hug islands and snipe. However once you find a weakness, couple of lone DDs with no support, or cruisers without BB backup, etc. you go and pounce. You actually have choices and can change flanks. You can poke around islands, kinda like in WOT around buildings, you can change flanks, heck you can face 2 DDs alone. What other BB has so many choices????

In summary, finally this is a BB that is fun that can do different things, go places, choose its targets and dictate fights as opposed to a slow lumbering beast that is at the mercy of a team supporting it ... or more often not. Yes you pay a price for it, but I think it is worth it.

So far I am having fun in mine. It plays like no other BB. I play it more like my Atago but without concealment. Indeed concealment is the only big problem as it is hard to surprise your chosen targets.

So please stop all the excessive bashing. No it is not terrible. It is simply unique.

PS: Is AMX 50 100 terrible HT in WOT? Well yes and no. For good drivers in a decent team it is very powerful. In wrong hands it is terrible.

All the people bashing it are either playing it wrong, or haven't even bought it and are just going off reviews. She's unique, and a real blast to play.

I'm still debating whether or not to buy it... One one hand, French captain trainer. On the other hand, all forward armament. There's a reason why I skipped Izumo....

Sorry but I just don;t think it's as good as the Warspite or the Arizona having faced it in both IMO

The operative phrase here being "I think".  For another player, it may be better.  And that's the beauty of a game like this, find what works for you.  I've got Warspite and Arizona, and will pick up Dunkerque.  Which one I prefer playing remains to be seen - I expect I'll play them all equally (and likely suck equally with infrequent brilliant matches).  Anyway, just because the ship doesn't seem like it'll works for you does not invalidate someone else's opinion.  But you have come across in several threads as bound and determined to convince everyone that the ship is utterly horrid.

My first game with her got one turret destroyed, but I used the other one to double citadel a rival Dunk. Ended up second on my team but part of that was cap XP.

Next game I got chased all over the place by the enemy CV, and while I took a couple hits I was surprised by how little torpedo damage I seemed to be taking. I forgot to check her torp protection stat but is it especially good? It sure felt like it was well protected from metal fish.

I'm hearing that more and more...and for 25 bucks I'm about 5 inches away from pulling the trigger on it.

i had couple of games in it last night. both games i was last one alive, infact last game i played i was fighting 2 bb, 1 Cl and 2 DD in their cap and it is fast and turns beautifully. I ended up with 3 kills one was 1 shot kill at 5 km and i got both DDs with secondaries while not one torp from either minekaze hit me, infact staying close to their BBs i had torps hit the new mexico. We lost as they had rest of team in our cap. This ship is fun to play if you can think outside the box.

I think you misunderstood I am just going by the impression having faced them in battle, I was just not impressed enough to buy one. If you can make it work more powwer to you

I will say this... she's mini-Izumo. The difference is that unlike Izumo, she doesn't face people who are also bow-on sniping. She plays like Izumo but gets a lot more broadsides to shoot at, so she feels more fun than Izumo. At least that's been my take so far.

There is no question they are both awesome. I have Warspite and NewMex.

Although they are all in the same BB category I really cannot even begin to compare Dunkerque to them as it is really more of a cruiser than BB. To me they are all great and while Warspite vs Arizona comparison works, Dunkerque vs Warspite/Arizone just doesn't make any sense.

The two games I played in mine were both quite fun, top of the team both times in tier 8 games. Of course, I like strange ships, so the all forward armament is appealing to me. Being willing to swap between HE and AP is important though, as her 13" guns aren't great at doing damage to bow-on battleships. Keen situational awareness is also important, but that should be the case with all ships, really. But, from what I can tell, most of the reviewers are reviewing her from the standpoint of a traditional ship, not the special snowflake she is. And, for the price, I think Dunkerque is an excellent buy. Get it and use the 3x commander mission to get hella captain skills, too.

Only had four games in Dunkerque last night but I found her more than adequate against Bayerns, Warspites, and Arizonas.  The main selling point for this ship is flexibility.  Dunkerque can push a side while being strong to incoming fire, and most opponents will have to show some side to fire most of their guns.  This resulted in my averaging 84k damage per game, though I only won 2/4 due to complete team collapse etc.  I do not blame myself or Dunkerque for the losses.  Had one game where 3-4 Dunkerques faced off against an equal number of normal slower T6 BBs, we held the line, and then pushed into them and wrecked them.  So far I get the impression that Dunkerque's weaknesses are easily countered by map awareness, and early focus fire on the typical HE spammers.

I would not be afraid to keep moving, wiggle that rear while retreating the turrets have amazing arcs even if they are only forward, do not close with superior forces (this is for every ship but meh), and get used to those shell travel times.  They're travelling far faster than most ship guns deliver out there (9.5sec to travel max range of ~18km).

Well I got gun mods, for aiming and reduced chance of damage since it has only 2 turrets.

Not sure about  the last one. I got steering but considering swapping for propulsion.

I have pretty solid stats in her (albeit only with 5 games played in her) bit I use both of the first main battery mods, and then both of the damage control mods. Propulsion and steering mods aren't bad, but you take a lot of HE while sitting bow on, so imo it's best to have equipment for negating that damage.

Careful Gomez, I don't consider myself a great player by any means (I do stupid stuff from time to time), but this ship will probably punish you hard if played wrong.  That said; I'd use main battery modification 1, the newer main battery dispersion reduction mod w/secondary bonuses, the damage control mod, and rudder shift; because cruiser like agility is great for dodging torpedo attacks.  I'm not sure there is a wrong answer for the last mod.
