Need a bit of help, how do I kill American CAs?

I normally do fine against cruisers in general. But, I am really bad at killing those American cruisers.

I can normally get critical on either the German or Russian cruisers, but I seem to either over pen or miss the critical locations.

I believe maybe also the height American cruisers is also throwing off my aim. Judging the true distance I sometimes overshoot the cruiser.

Should I aim at the waterline or below the waterline?

Also, what ammo should I use against the Atlanta, AP or HE?

I hope to improve my play style with the Scharnhorst.

Thank you.

At the water line.

If cruiser angled or bow on, use HE and burn them

AP at completely broadside cruisers

Which American CA in particular? All of them are fairly easy to citadel, except for the Cleveland, which much harder to citadel compared to other cruisers.

Also, always use AP against cruisers in a battleship.

I know with the Russian cruisers I been having luck shooting a tick below the waterline with the Scharnhorst. Wasn't sure with the American cruisers is that still applies.

Because he is playing the Scharnhorst. Cruisers can bounce her shells off when angled.

I don't shoot HE at cruisers too, I just wait till they make the turn or I look for another cruiser in my range who is nicely broadside.

Pretty much all the American Cruisers, The Atlanta and Cleveland are made with paper and my shells just over pen.

I apply a similar play style. But, sometimes have to face cruiser throwing HE at you. I hate facing those Atlanta's.

Even aiming at the waterline, my shells normally land 2/3 above the water. I wonder if I should aim a tick down?

Did you take in the idea that they are charging at you at a slight angle? Other than that, That's just RNG from the Scharnhorst nothing you can do about that.

Due to the Scharn's terrible normalization & fairly fast reload, it's viable to fire HE at angled cruisers. It's a cruiser killer, so it's ok to fire HE. Additionally, USN cruisers are fairly susceptible to fires, especially the Cleveland. But you're better off using AP on them when they're broadside / badly angled.

Why would you use HE on a cruiser in a battleship?

Three easy reasons:

1. RNG not in your favour and sick of seeing overpens, want to do some actual damage.

2. Because putting a cruiser on fire is sweet, sweet justice.

3. Loaded HE anticipating a destroyer, why waste it.

i have better luck with he on fresh ships.

once their on fire and things are burnt and knocked out. he seems to do less.

of course u can only light so many fires at once.

but does he do less damage after say...u get creddit for destroying a scout plane and a turret.

does that mean my next shot potentially will do less because theres already sections knocked out.

he is explosive. so once everything above thick armor has exploded whats up?

Lots of posts already but pretty much people already said it.  Use AP and shoot at the hull of a broadside.  Use HE any other time and aim for the structures.

once he has wrecked the top of a ship. scout plane and such. does he get less damage potential?

once a ship is fully in flames. is shooting he less effective?

If you're shooting at a Pensacola, just sort of sneeze in its general direction.

That usually does the trick.

I just bought the Atlanta and every battle I have been in I have been sunk - FAST!  It takes dirty looks, happy looks, clown cars, running into curbs...   The damned thing is made of paper.  Great rate of fire (you can land 50, 70 or more hits), but you are everyone's favorite first target.  Fast and can turn but if a fly lands on you, you are toast with or without butter.  Now if I can only figure out how to make it a submarine and have it play pop goes the weasel at the last moment on battleships with very low hit points left.....:D

Cleveland is easy. Aim just behind the the smokestacks at the waterline, just near the second island. Citadel city. Just have to choke up on the Cleveland some.

Just get them to shoot at you, once they start shooting at you they will eat citadels from everyone around you and they will die....
