Greetings all,

So we all know about the English raid on the Normandie dock with the HMS Cambletown to take out "the only floating dry dock in Europe large enough to accommodate a battleship the size of the Tirpitz". But this image shows Tirpitz in a floating dry dock in Kiel, the picture labels it simply as "Dock B". So what gives? Was dock B bombed and destroyed by the British before the Normandie dock was destroyed, and that's why the Tirpitz couldnt use it, or what? Because if not than the Normandie dock obviously isnt the "only" floating dry dock in Europe capable of accommodating the Tirpitz.

The Normandie dock was the only dock large enough to accommodate Tirpitz that was on the Atlantic. There were other docks that could handle her, but they were in Germany, and would require Tirpitz to return to Germany following an Atlantic raid.

This. The St Nazaire dock was important because it allowed the Bismarck-class to repair and sortie with minimum interference from the Brits. Docks in Germany were less important because to get out of German waters, they'd have to run the gauntlet of the Royal Navy.

The Normandie Dock in St Nazaire was a graving dock not a floating dock.
