Note: These ships are primarily known as the Trad class, but WoWS names premiums after the second ship in the class, so, Phuket...

Phuket.JPG

Small, sleek, and sexy...

Built in 1934 for the Royal Thai Navy, Phuket was the second ship in the Italian built Trad class of large torpedo boats. Built to take advantage of the congested shipping lanes and harbors of south east Asia, Phuket served through WWII, fighting alongside the Japanese, and was not retired until the mid 70's. Let's take a detailed look at this little warrior...

Hull:

Large only when compared to more traditional torpedo boats, Phuket is 66m long, displacing 470 tons for 6k hitpoints, the fewest in the game. Good thing she's a small target. Barely a Tier 2 DD.

Armor:

Nothing to see here, folks, move right along.

Main Armament:

3 x 1 - 76mm/40 12pdr 12cwt QF Mk II. British built DP guns, originally ordered to simplify logistics by matching other guns in RTN service. Japan also built a licensed version of this gun, ensuring a steady supply of shells during the war.

ROF: 15rpm, 680 m/s velocity. Even the Tachibana has better guns, but no worries, it IS called a torpedo boat, after all.

Torpedoes:

2x2 450mm, 2x1 450mm. 6 tubes total with the singles wing mounted alongside the bridge with the twins centerline. The Smith has proven the single tube concept to be viable, for simplicity's sake, treat all mounts as rapid firing single tubes. The most likely torpedo is the Umikaze's type 44 Mod 2, but another Japanese option is the 45cm Type 97, 5.5km @ 66kts, 6.5k damage.

AA:

Besides the 3 76mm DP guns, also mounted 2 20mm Breda guns and 4 8mm machine guns, actually a quite decent AA battery for such a small ship.

Maneuverability:

The fastest boat in the class, Phuket zips along at 32 knots, on the upper end of Tier 2 DD's. Her tiny stature makes her quite the spinner, with a 425M (Thanks Dseehafer ;) ) turn radius.

ONI Identification card, WWII

Conclusion:

Phuket is an option for a Smith/Tachibana type premium for the Pan Asian tree. It's fast, stealthy, and packs a huge punch, at the cost of worst in game survivability and guns. If battlecruisers are eggshells, armed with hammers, what we have with Phuket is a ninja, armed with a grenade...

Not all premium ships are named after the second ship in the class. Atlanta is an example. Yubari another, as well as Smith. I don't see them putting a ship named Phuket in the game even if it is an historical name.

That said, it would be a pretty neat little boat. Sounds mostly like a Storoszhevoi.

Wow, she can turn in only 425mm!

Gonna give her poor crew whiplash!

And to which premium ships are you referring? Scharnhorst and Arizona are the only ones I can think of that are the second ships of their class. I think KA was the 3rd Kaiser, not the second.

Albany, Arkansas, Texas, Arizona, Indianapolis, Atago, Diana, Molotov, Blyskawica, Emden, Tirpitz, Warspite, All second ships in thier classes. Scharnhorst and Smith may or may not be, depending on the system used (Laid down vs launched vs completed). If you discount the premiums that are a class of one, or paper/never completed, you find most are named after the second ship, unless there is another ship in the class with more historical merit. Anyhow, if having a tiny Jack Russell terrier of a DD named Phuket offends you, feel free to refer to it as the Trad.  :)

You missed the point. You give a definitive that WG names their premiums after the second ships in the class, I gave you examples to counter that. Considering the name of the ship is a homonym to a rather recognizable expletive, I can see the chances of WG using the name "Phuket" to be less than 0%. Smith is considered to be of the Smith class, Scharnhorst is considered to be of the Gneisenau class. The reasoning behind it, being, of course, that all tech tree ships are named after the classes, so premiums would have to be named after another ship in the class. Hence why Atlanta and Smith can be the first of the class. Ships like Indianapolis and Arizona are historically important, so that is why they're not the lead ship.

There is no historical relevance for this little torpedo boat.

And, for the record, it doesn't offend me, lol. But, just because it's a small ship doesn't mean people won't read it.

True, probably should have said that they tend to name premiums after the second ship. As for it being a homonym, I present to you World of Tanks German Tier 7 light tank, the SPIC... ;)

That's not even a homonym, haha. Just silly. But, it seems the WoWS team is a little more...keen than the WoT form of WG, which is probably why I don't play WoT anymore.

Truth. WoWS at it's worst is half as toxic as WoT on any given Tuesday. Honestly, I was just trying to have some fun with doing the ADLA on Phuket as opposed to the Trad or the class as a whole. If it seems to be a major hangup, I'll just re-write the jokes.

Looking at the low-tier German DDs, mixed single and twin torpedo tubes are now a mechanic that exists in the game. So a Trad class Pan-Asia premium could have the torps in their historical 2x2, 2x1 configuration with no problem.

It'd be a fun little ship to have sure.  Name included.  If the enemy team is talking more about the name rather than fighting, then that's a few more seconds for her torpedoes to make it or a few more seconds of them not actually aiming and firing.

And this little ship is guaranteed to be one of those that will be a perfect distraction.
