Why not a First Officer?

I think it would be nice if two Captains could be assigned to the same ship.

The one with lower rank will be assigned to the position of First Officer.

 

As First Officer, the only benefit they would get, is that they gain 50% XP of what the Captain of the ship gets.

The First Officer's skills should NOT apply in conjunction with the higher ranking Captain, as this would be OP.

 

The higher ranking Captain is assigned to be the Captain of the ship and his skills are applied per usual. He also gains XP as he normally would.

It is a difficult system to balance, trying to make the mechanic both interesting, and indepth, but also simple enough for most people to understand, and use it properly, many times, game mechanics lean towards one or the other, and less commonly meet in the middle to perfectly balance both sides.

The real reason is that, while more depth is neat, it adds nothing to gameplay and requires reconfirming the intended rate of commander progression.

After all the crying and moaning about skills when they made SA free? I guess if you're a fan of forum drama this might be a good idea for the next time skills change.

Did you actually read what I proposed it does?

 

the only thing the First Officer would do, is leech XP off of the captain. They would change nothing to current gameplay, other than being able to train two captains at once.

Skills. All the crying was about changing skills. If the XO has skills wouldn't they also be affected by a skill change?

Perhaps if it stopped the commander's XP gain completely and only gave the 2IC 50%, it could work. Would be a (slow) way to grind up a new commander without having to play without skills.

Even that would work on a premium ship that requires a 11pt+ captain.

 

Then I can shove my 15pt Baltimore captain into my Atlanta and also stick in my 9pt Clemson captain in there, so I don't have to play with the 9pt Clemson captain, which is suboptimal on Atlanta.

I like the captain skills the way it is, but I could see them adding in additional officers in the future. First Officer/Executive Officer, Navigation Officer, Gunnery Officer, Chief Engineer, etc...

That was rejected very early on. They're wary of even adding another tier of commander skills to the one crewperson we already have, for fear of power creep and balance difficulties. It's a neat idea, hardly an original one, but one that would require nerfing to the point where it's no more effective than the present system (like how WoT's crew system is basically no stronger, but harder to grind and less flexible with respect to transferring to other vehicles).
