I just started playing not too long ago and have a whopping 30 random battles to my credit. I have been playing PvE  a lot getting used to the basics and after reading the forums and also watching videos until I finally felt comfortable enough that I wouldn't embarrass myself too much I ventured into PvP.  I do have a couple of questions though.

Is there a standard of sorts as far as stats are concerned to know if I am performing and progressing as I should be.? I know it's too early with my very limited amount of battles played  I just want to know if I am holding my own in battle and helping my team and not hurting them. The other one is what is the number beside your name in the service record represent? mine says 3 is that because I have played mostly tier 3 ships? Thanks in advance for your patience if these are rather dumb questions. Also if anyone sees me do anything stupid out there please let me know because I don't know what I don't know. Thanks and my all your enemies sail Broadside and you shells hit Citidels.

The number is your account level. When you get more exp you'll eventually level up and get more access to different features like captains, camo, missions, ranked mode, and team battles.

As for stats, as long as you aren't hanging out at the bottom of your team's leaderboard all the time when a match is finished you should be fine. There are stat websites and whatnot displaying the server averages and how you stack up, but you're right to just concentrate on learning what to do and not do.

My Account level is 9 ( I think because that is what the number on the left says and I have Captains and camo) I am talking about the little number on the upper right beside your name

That number is your karma. A feels good number that represents the difference between how many times you've been complimented vs reported using the in-game feature.

And yeah as far as stats go just try and be in the middle of the after battle report for now.

As others have said look at team list at the end of the battle and where you fall in that list is a good way to see if your helping or hurting. With so few battles don't be concerned with win rate yet.

You could be zero but it's my understanding the karma system doesn't go into negatives.
