make torpedo acceleration into ammo

Here is a suggestion, let me know if people think it's a good idea:

Currently we have captain skill in tree that reduces torpedo range in exchange for speed. Why not make this into a new "torpedo ammo"? It simulates real time torpedo settings "slow" vs. "fast" modes. Make it another ammo slot: 4, so that all ships carrying torpedoes will have two options, the current "slow" mode and the accelerated "fast" mode. It gives more tactical options to torpedo carrying ships. If we have two shells types, why not two torpedo types as well?

So... a quickly accessible, user friendly, "slider" interface that can adjust torpedo speed vs. range on the fly. Interesting. Would have to obviously have upper and lower limits on both variables, but interesting. Then, you start to think of the possibilities: "25km Shime torps," "15km Zao stealth-fired torps," longer range Russian DD torps. It would probably be a game balance nightmare. In two words: "Torpedo Soup."

An even simpler idea would be that "3" would be the single preset slow setting and that "4" would be the single preset fast setting. This would allow for a very simple and intuitive interface without the need for fine on the fly adjustments.

Not a bad idea since Torpedomen had to set range and arm prior to firing

Devs have been asked about this a few times, and every time they said a very definite "no" to this idea.

Maybe they'll change their mind in the future, but for now it is what it is.

I think the implications it would have on game balance would be too profound. They treat torpedo maximum range as they do AA: "This is your maximum range, this is what your ship is capable of." I'm good with that; however, variety is the spice of life.

I agree, though the semblance of choice does not mean a meaningful choice, WG does seem to be struggling on this a bit in my opinion.  Not sure about the OP myself, but I find many games fail to make choices that create a balanced asymmetry.  Which is unfortunate, because a diverse community with many equally viable styles of gameplay makes for a more engaging, and entertaining experience.

Or Just a toggle, like how you can click the 3 button to change from narrow to wide spreads.

I think a toggle between normal speed / range (that we have now) and faster torps / shorter range would work. Increasing range at the expense of speed won't - all CAs would be launching 15km slow torps non-stop.

Problem with this is that we already have the fast settings for the torpedoes with some exceptions.

The only (historical) choice we have is to slow them down for more range.

Even simpler would be to auto-select the range/speed setting based on the target range, target closing speed, and capabilities of the torpedo (if no target was selected it would default to one or the other setting).

Make the speed disproportionally slow at the far end of the range setting. That makes it far easier to detect and evade. And/or similar treatment to the reload time. So the longer the range you use, the slower the torps reload.
