Hi guys, today I'm giving you colorized pics of the Kongō class. As per usual the pics com from: http://blog.livedoor.jp/irootoko_jr/

hBOUMWS.jpgHere we see the Kongō on sea trials at Tateyama on November 14, 1936, soon after her modernization into a fast battleship. A great starboard beam shot showing some great detail on the ship. (Note: The Kongō-class ship we have in game is Hiei not Kongō)

n3sCcMU.jpgHere we can see Hiei after her 1st reconstruction training her guns to port in this port beam picture taken at Sasebo in June, 1926.

YdAPlz6.jpgHere we see Hiei in heavy seas at Oshima on October 24, 1927. Her guns are trained starboard aft, and at least gun turrets 3 & 4 have just fired one gun apiece.

w1N5h0u.jpgIn this shot we see "Training ship" Hiei during her demilitarized state in the 1930s in compliance with the Washington Naval Treaty. She has seen the removal of her number 4 gun turret as shown in this starboard stern view. Also this is after her second reconstruction.

upRJjlt.jpgIn this excellent port beam shot we see Hiei on sea trials after her final reconstruction before the war. (This is the best picture to see the in game Kongō)

txMI0tm.jpgIn this beautiful sunset shot of Hiei's starboard beam taken at Saeki Bay between October 22-23, 1941. We see her guns trained to starboard and see her as she went to war not 2 months later.

vMGYbf8.jpgIn this starboard stern shot of Kirishima taken after her 1st reconstruction in July 1932, we see a good view of her aft guns and superstructure.

HMnA4Dv.jpgIn this cool shot taken April 27, 1939 in Sukumo Bay, we see Kirishima in her 2nd reconstruction with which she went to war. And as a bonus we see the carrier Akagi off Kirishima's starboard beam. For reference, here's the original image:9pS1x3h.jpg

mu8HgRv.jpgHere is the final shot of Kirishima showing a fantastic port beam view of her as she lies at anchor in Sukumo Bay on May 10, 1937.

wSMCDTL.jpgA good picture of Haruna, taken while she is on sea trails after reconstruction at Tateyama on May 25, 1928.

WlldNOa.jpgHere we see Haruna on sea trails after her second reconstruction in 1934. Of note is the fact her rangefinders have not been installed yet.

a2MmUbQ.jpgAnd in this shot in August, 1934, we see her still on sea trials in this port bow view of her, however she has her rangefinders installed now showing her further along in trials.

NNTFBZG.jpg

And here we see the end of Haruna, sunk at her moorings in Kure Harbor in May 1946, at least 9 months after the end of the war, 10 since she was sunk on July 28, 1945.

And there we have it! For the next batch I'll do some US ships (unless someone requests a specific ship or class). Until then, fair winds and following seas captains! :honoring:

Neat! Thanks for putting the pics together. Now I'm wishing the ARP ships would have been modeled after the proper ships. Those superstructure changes are pretty pronounced.

Lacking that, Haruna premium to match Texas in sister ship AA barge role.

Sad to see such a beautiful class get lost to the depths of the sea :(

I actually wish one of these ships survived the war and was a museum ship today

Indeed, they were very beautiful. I wish the same for Yamato, and the Enterprise (she went to the scrapyard despite the efforts to make her a museum):(

Either Kongo or Haruna could fulfill that function really, but I would like to see Kongo herself take that role because while Haruna has 2 more DP mounts and 14 less 25mms than Kongo, she also has all 16 of her casemate guns while Kongo does not (thus we see the emphasis on AA rather than anti-surface for the secondary armament more).  Plus Kongo is the more decorated of the two: while both were involved in the Henderson Field bombardment in October 1942 Kongo also made significant contributions at Samar while Haruna only reported straddles.

It's not like WG can't rename the in-game Kongo to Hiei at any time...

Yes indeed, Kongo scored hits on USS Hoel (DD-533), USS Heermann (DD-532), and USS Gambier Bay (CVE-73). And she sunk USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413)

I like the simple things you see in the snaps... like the white canvas awning stretched out at the stern of the ship. Nice stuff.

I see no pickles.  I demand a refund!

That site has tons of very interesting shots.  Just wish it was easier to navigate.  Thanks for sharing.

Plus that's just about the end for potential museum ships.  The reason the Enterprise was scrapped despite interested parties with deep pockets wanting to preserve her is there was no way to remove the nuclear reactors without cutting the ship apart and the USN was unwilling (understandably) to let those sit in private hands.  They also would have needed continual maintenance as there was no way to "shut them down."  While there were a few CVs made after her that went back to traditional propellants, I don't think we'll see a nuclear museum ship, which rules out most remaining CVs and all designs that have been produced since the Nimitz-class.

Wrong enterprise good sir, I was referring the USS Enterprise (CV-6) not (CVN-65) I am already adware that the nuclear reactors prevent such a thing from happening.

Ah.  Since she was scrapped back before 1960 if I remember correctly I thought you meant CVN-65 that was only just recently scrapped.  I think the real shame is the scrapyard never fulfilled it's promise to save her unique tripod mast for a museum piece.

However, Enterprise was nuclear, and well...

Let's just say that scrapping her was for the best. The good thing is, most of her interior will be transferred to the new USS Enterprise, so they're carrying the legacy :)

I don't think they can, as all ships in game are namesake ships of the class.

So we can beg REALLY hard and hope (not being sarcastic, mind you,) and ask them to change the model to Kongo, and same to the ARP Kongo ships.
