Explain this to me?! I'm dumbfounded.

Why did they say the Mahan was bad again? Bad range or something? Maybe I should rethink maining BBs

I have yet to understand why people think the Mahan is bad. Maybe because the Benson is so good and the Fletcher is epic. But the Mahan can hold its own and I thought it was Way better than the Farragut.

CBT and early release reputation.

It was slow, had bad maneuverability, and had crap torpedoes at tier 7.

Kind of how I feel about the Furutaka. I hear she is great now but that ship hurt me, never going back lol.

I know, sub orbital. But I seems to have the ability to land most of my shells from orbit on targets, not so much on fast moving destroyers. Heck I could keep Cleveland shells with AFT on target and those suckers had to get clearance from NASA.

This.

The Mahan is still on the slow side for DDs at 35 knots (the Myoko can go that fast). It also has a fairly bad detection range and no Concealment System to bring it down like the Benson can.

The icing on the cake before US DD torpedoes were changed was its torp loadout. You had the choice between the Farragut's high speed and high damage 4km torps, or ~7km slower torps that weren't as strong. Not as bad as the Sim's torps in any regard, but it was still not as strong of an offering. The only real advantages it had over the Farragut were the extra torp launcher and the health pool.

Also, the AA hulls weren't a thing yet, so in order to have the health pool and maneuverability you had to sacrifice a gun (although this was still the case on the Farragut and Benson too).

Now, the Mahan actually gets the ability to stealth torp so it can actually keep ships at arm's length.

I haven't had issues in my Mahan, after playing  lot of sims to get my stealth carolina captain, other slower turret traverse and slightly bigger turn radius, the Mahan feels like home. I just miss the invisfire, but it's not that big of a deal.

USN 12.7's are the same across the board meaning playing a fletcher feels no different than playing a nicholas or an atlanta,

I don't get it.

I am confused as to why a player who mains BBs managed to outdo the rest of the team in the second DD they've ever owned. Skipped up to VI and then partially grinded out to Mahan.

7.9 detection

True, its not great for a DD but I feel like it'd be easy to adapt to that. Not to mention, as one who owns the Yamato and quite often plays ships that can be spotted at ~14km or more, 7.7km detection (although I've reduced it with specs) is a blessing.

Dem Arcs tho.

Yeah the arcs are crazy. 14s shell time at 14km is terrible when you consider ships like the Moskva have 1/2 that travel time at the same range or a Yamato where 14s is at 25km. However my targets are commonly under 6km (the way I play) and anything above that is mostly a BB so its too bad. Also I played the pre-buff Yorck so I'm familiar with arcs like that

All in all, I never thought of picking up DDs cause I imagined the switch in playstyles would too jarring for me to adapt to; I didn't think I'd have this much fun. Though I can assume if I was DD main and tried BBs my experience would be very different.

Here's a lesson you could follow (or not): main battleships first, its way easier to switch lines

The thing is, when you go to contest a cap ( especially on the start of the match ) you will always, ALWAYS be the first one spotted, any other DD in the range of tier 5~9 ( that you'll be facing ) ( aside from the russian because they should not try to cap ) has better concealment.

e 4km torps, or ~7km slower torps

Actually it was 5.5km  default and 6.4km upgraded.

But you lost like 5 k dmg per torp by upgrading for an extra 900m I remember hating those upgraded torps i never used them and I stuck with the 5.5km.

Compared to the farragut it was just a downgrade in almost every respect. Thats why the Mahan was so bad back then. It was literally a island ambush , anti DD Destroyer. It could not stealth torp, had horrible concealment at 7.9km .

Back then,  pretty much none had a CE captain. No camo to get that nice -3% reduction.

It was slow,  it had bad maneuvering.. Smoke got nerfed.

Like Final stated, it was literally a side grade from the Farragut. Besides the health and extra torp launcher. It did not have much going for it back then.. Nothing like today.

Mahan is generally seen as meh in no small part because she's literally a Farragut with lower concealment until you get the torpedo upgrade.  My brother hated this ship until it was fully-upgraded at which point his opinion improved.  Key is improved.

the big issue with mahan is speed and detection.   you have to play it as support DD  unless you are top tier.

To be honest, I thought you had the loading screen screenshot so I was wondering why Mahan was at the top. I thought it was an all-destroyer game :hiding:

Just had my best game in a Mahan, 117K dmg.  Yes I was top tier, but I still placed first on the team as well.  It's a decent ship with a lot of small drawbacks, but with the torps and guns a smart skipper can pound some damage on the enemy...IF that skipper picks and chooses the right times to do so.

Ah, thanks for the correction.

Yeah, I bailed on the "upgraded" torps when I had a game where I got to point blank range on a Nagato and slammed 10 torps into it. It dealt just over half of its hp...
