Torps, torps, torps.............

....and more torps.  Last night in Random, it looked like a good fun matchup one on one with a ARP Haruna.  I was driving the Kongo.  Looking forward to some fun, until I get torped by a DD from my own team.  He then says I should get the hell out of the way.  Hey, it's only a game so my life goes on just as well as it was before, but I have to say, some people's kids just lack what I would consider even a moderate level of common sense.  Then I realized he or she was probably only about 12 years old, so what the hey, right?  What's a guy to do other then hit the escape button and move on.  :D

I know, I know many posts like this here, but I thought it was funny anyhoo.

Ah yes. I was told this once on my Tirpitz. Apparently it's my fault that my BB can't lithely jaunt to the side to dodge friendly torps xD

And I, driving my DD's, see way to many battleships unaware of me and the support I can give with my torps, just plowing into brawling range and duking it out. But, since I am much older than 12, I resist launching them and use gunfire. I do this in my IJN DD's and laugh as the red BB turns away violently - even though it should be obvious I couldn't have launched without hitting green - exposing the broadside to the friendly BB. It is a game, and a fun one regardless.

Guess there is a lot of "conditioning" to torp launches out there. My apologies to you both for the errors of DD captains.

No apology needed.  I have never encountered your friendly torps, and if I had, it is only a friendly game after all so again, no apologies are in order.  One cannot take such a game seriously unless they are in it for the money, which I most certainly am not.  :)

Lithely does not describe me, so it should not be able to describe my BB either.  :teethhappy:

I play DD primarily, and BB a close 2nd.  IMHO, any DD who uses anything but the "I'm sorry, I didn't see you, my bad, I should have paid more attention" excuses, should have their torpedo license revoked.  Accidents do happen, especially at the lower tiers, but even at mid and higher level tiers, there are way to many people launching 5-7km torps through their teammates, at targets 8-9km away, who are moving away from them.  I've dodged more torps last weekend from my own team, let alone the enemy team.

It's all good. I wasn't mad about it. I also wasn't in brawl range at the time. More than likely they didn't see me coming around an island when they let them fly. I just thought it was funny that they yelled at me for getting hit after I laughed it off and told them don't worry about it. I mean I /did/ hit the rudder but there's only so much a Tirpitz will turn in 3 seconds. :D

This ^^...I've been stalked by several folks for saying "do not shoot torps behind allies"...

The collective reasoning is that they shot first, and I should inherently know what's going on behind me.

Last time I torped a friendly was on 2B when I was trying to torp through the NE corner gap and didn't see him coming in from the right to go through, fortunately he didn't die, but being hit didn't help after he went through...

Before that I hadn't torped anyone (I have hi allies with gunfire though,) almost since January or February. (It's been so long I don't remember the last time before the 2B incident.)

One might think that with my abysmal torp hit rate I fling them about recklessly, (Extremely often uses torpedoes in ship that have them, according to WST,) but that is not the case; I have been quite deliberate in watching out for allies, even before the new Pinkening rules came into effect.

It's the DD's fault , he ddnt make sure the path was clear before launching.

Agree with some. Way to many BBs and others just charging around not watching and colliding with others or sailing into torps, even with warning message. Need to look out of the gun sight frequently.

I am a whole lot older than 12.  (sorry to say). I used to work around ships of various sizes. On the larger vessels they had a steering set of props on

the fore section of the ship. They where called bow thrusters. They where for the larger ships to move in tight places. I wonder if battleships had them? If they did maybe we can ask the developers to include them on battleships. It won't solve the problem, but it may help. I learned my lesson the hard way after sinking a friendly BOT. Which turned me a lovely shade of pink for a while. Now? I don't launch torps in the same zip code of an allied vessel.

True story, but with that said it is always the responsibility of the guy that pulls the trigger to make sure his rounds are discharged in a safe manner, whether it is real life at the gun range or make believe like here.  Only the consequences differ.  :)

Agreed on that part as they relate, as you may guess.  It can be on any other ship as being fault as well, I do a quick calculations on where my team is at and the direction/speed they are going.  Then I fire at X point in time traveling at S speed when checking and if they turn into the path of my torp field around that point in time Y or Z or whatever the other ship is partially to blame if they get hit.  I can try to chat a notice to them if I see them doing it, but by that time I have done my best so that I would not hit them in the first place.  Sometimes I have to fire and forget them if I am in close battle with someone after launching on other ships.

This is the other reason I usually do not use the 20k torps as they are in the water too long.  Heck on the 10k torps I got an allied DD that lost his rudder came around the back side of an island he was totally clear 2 min ago in game when I checked and aligned up on a BB. It was a multiple hits with 1 allied and one enemy ship sunk by my torps...

Ships from the era that this game represents didn't have bow thrusters.  I'm not certain when they became an option on ships, but I can remember them being used on ships from the late 70s.

Two, three or four fixed-pitch screws, shafted directly to a reduction gear that was directly connected to a turbine set.  Speed changes were slow at best, changing the direction of rotation took minutes (edit: at anything other than pierside speeds.)

Only having one or two rudders didn't help matters at all, these things were not maneuverability power houses.  In any case, maneuvering thrusters really aren't effective at anything faster than three or four knots.  They wouldn't really help in the game with anything except grounding yourself fully alongside an island, and if we were to get that detailed the island would have already hulled the ship and there wouldn't be any point.

"But I warned you in chat!"Doesn't cut it.

I look at chat whenever I can, but when I'm fighting my DD for my life I am not looking for "torp warnings" from some Aoba 6 km behind me. I don't have time. And frankly, if you torp an allied BB you should be denied use of torps. They can't manuever fast enough to turn into a responsible torp launch.

I've been pink a few times and HATE it. Twice I was panicked in close quarters and hit an ally just outside my tunnel vision. Those were negligent discharges and entirely my fault. Once a Troll  in a Clemson deliberately turned back into my torps. 4 hit the BB between us which he had missed somehow, but he managed to eat my other 2 torps that went past the BB.  My range to BB was about 4 km.

In none of these cases did I have time to type "Hey buddy I just launched torps which will hit YOU if you don't watch out."  If you have time to type that message, don't launch the torps!

Let me add that this is with 970 battles in DDs with torp range over 6km.
