Hello all, it appears that these are popular so I shall do more. If you want a specific ship or ship class let me know. As always the pics come from: http://blog.livedoor.jp/irootoko_jr/

qlBdBw1.jpgHere we see Takao herself on her sea trials in 1932. Of note is the masts which show her original configuration.

u1i1xwZ.jpgIn this shot taken on May 11 1937, we see a good shot of Takao's port stern showing the rear guns, catapult and the aft bridge structure. She still hasn't been reconstructed yet.

WV7Dgwn.jpgIn this excellent starboard beam shot we see the newly reconstructed Takao on sea trails in July 1939, we can tell because of the new fore mast just aft of the bridge.

BiruqHv.jpgHere we see a fantastic shot of Takao's starboard bridge showing the AA gun director, forward type 93 torpedo launcher, one of the 12 cm/45 10th year type naval guns pointing to the sky, the main artillery director and the forward stack.

ZaClZDp.jpg

In this pic we see Atago on sea trails at Sukumo Bay on February 12, 1932, in her original configuration. All in all an excellent port beam shot.

z3nJie8.jpgIn this starboard bow shot of Atago at anchor we get a good look at her numbers 1 and 2 20 cm/50 3rd year type naval guns, as well as a good look at the bridge front.

BFzlR2A.jpg

Here we see Maya at Tawitawi in May 1944, showing her starboard beam. In this pic we can see just how much bigger her bridge structure is compared to her sisters, it was enlarged for more AA guns and in return she lost her number 3 gun turret.

jNq9Y0g.jpgIn this interesting shot of Maya, we are just under the number 2 gun turret looking up at the bridge over the AA gun nests.

HmTHT0a.jpg

Here we see Chōkai during target practice in 1938. She is leaning to port so that may mean she's executing a turn to starboard, all guns are trained to port and have just fired.

ak3MXG7.jpg

Here we see Chōkai at anchor giving a good look at her starboard side, including her float plane.

mHcMmhB.jpgIn this excellent shot of Chōkai's starboard bridge we can see all the things mentioned on Takao earlier, though there are differences, such as the placement of her starboard gun director.

u6dj5W1.jpgAnd finally we see the 4th Cruiser squadron performing maneuvers in August 1933 in their original configurations.

And that's it! Let me know if you want a specific ship, I've got plenty. Fair winds and following seas captains! :honoring:

Still can't figure out how the sub that sank Maya thought it was a Kongo

For comparison as to how looking through a sub periscope looks like, and of course the two Kongo class ships left at the time Maya was sunk.

The time of the attack was 05:33 so, nighttime conditions.

i could see that, since maya only had four turrets it would be easy to misidentified through a periscope.

thanks for sharing OP, these are among my favorite looking ships. there are a few shots here that i have not seen, really cool.

Also it was 05:33 in the morning. So it was pretty dark. No problem man, I got plenty of these colorized photos to share ranging from Japanese and German, to American and British ships.

I've always loved the Takao class for its towering, and bulky superstructure, Its easily one of my most favorite Heavy cruisers of WW2~! +1.

The IJN's best Heavy Cruisers in all their glory. Sad they're all resting at the bottom, would've loved to have either Maya or Takao as a museum ship today.

Can you do a selection on my favorite IJN CA, the Mogami class? If you have images of Mogami and Mikuma in their 155mm configs that would be lovely.

I most certainly can, give a bit and you'll have more pics of Mogami, Mikuma, Suzuya, and Kumano than you can shake a stick at. (Although I don't know how big of a stick you have so...)

The picture of the "Maya" would be an interesting option for a another hull for Myoko...you lose a forward turret but get better AA...interesting option.
