I realized something today about ranges in this game

The reason all the ranges are so pathetically short compared to historical ranges is just compression.  Pretty much everything, from mains, to torps, to secondaries has had its range cut in half (or more) just so you can be closer to the ships you're shooting at, and don't have to sail for as long.

I think this was obvious to everyone except me, until now.  I was just pissed that my secondaries were so short ranged.

Yes. So is how far ships are. The ships we see at 20km, if we assumed our ship were accurate to size, would actually be 5km away. A true 20km target would be like us looking out at an 80km target.

When you look at it,  The Cleveland is an Atlanta with 12 extra 6" guns.

Could you imagine controlling those 5" guns, with 10/13 Km range switching back and forth between Atlanta/Cleveland modes?

AP in the 6", HE in the 5"

At tier 6 it would give Over-Powered a whole new meaning.

If things were scaled in real proportion, 5% hit rate is a blessing. So much valuable that bringing additional gun to bear is worth the risk to get that hit. Crossing the T would be a feat not unlike those many famous admirals were known for, not the paddlin' joke we all love to facepalm in this game. :D

I thought the devs said that ranges were not compressed.

I meant distances, not ranges.

Distances are not compressed.  Main gun ranges are distance from optical rangefinder to horizon, secondaries are shortened range for balance.

Speed is accelerated approx 5-6x normal.

There are lots of things out of scale with this game.  The potential maximum engagement ranges are shorter.  The kinetic performance and maneuverability of all the ships is exaggerated.  That's just what this game is about, though; an arcade shooter where things are closed-in, sped up, and artificially balanced to make things more appealing and fun for an average person.

The thing that strikes me is how comically out of scale the buildings and all the other land objects are.  They are way too small!  It looks stupid.

The ships in the game are sped up considerably.  Do you think a 30 knot ship would have time to react to a 2600 fps shells that are inbound?

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that only muzzle velocity? shells would slow down over distance i think.

Yes, but that's not the point he was making.

I put this in the "bug" file, but yesterday I was hit by torps that were dropped 2k OUTSIDE of the boundary layer! The torps came from  outside the boundary and pasted right through????????

Are planes alowed well past the boundary ships are limited to stay inside?

Seems like a bug to me.

I also mention this happening and I was told  that if plans are set to auto they will go outside the boundaries and I was also told not to stay so close to the boundaries. The problem is some of the boundaries are to confining for the bigger ships to maneuver around islands to close to the boundary lined between the caps. I am just a Noob anyway.

I would like to know why the ranges on US ships especially cruisers are not equal to those of other countries?

i think they have corrected it since , but say 30kts to one ship wasn't 30kts to another (for example; according to the UI both ships were moving at 30kts, yet if you looked at their speeds relative to the same point, Ship A could be doing 25kts and ship B could be doing 35KTS) This would create scenarios where a DD moving at 40kts could be chased down by a CA moving at 30kts (really throws a wrench in your plan to drop torps and run away when you look back at a ship you know can't go as fast as you, and yet is closing in on you at a KM every 30 seconds)

i think they have since sorted that out, but the point remains, WG manipulates time and space in order to create a level playing field. They can and do scale ships up and down, accelerate/decelerate  time of everything, scale landmasses, and they can scale physics.

It's not a bug, it's a feature. The purpose is to prevent people (CVs mostly) from sitting on the map border.

The ships themselves are either accurately scaled relative to one another, or so close to accurate as to make no difference, and most of the terrain features are a lot closer to being in-scale than the camera angle can suggest. The reported distances are wildly out of scale compared to the ships and terrain, though.

Well in 1984 on Yarra while doing MK 48 ADCAP trials in a 31 knot DE we sure did not outrun or dodge a 60-70 knot Torp..

Ranges aren't compressed, they're clipped.

There's a difference. Mostly with the shell arcs. If ranges were compressed, you'd have a lot more plunging fire and deck pens.
