Anyone else tired of seeing everyone watching and and hear all the hype for all these VR tech and VR supported games, and knowing you can't even begin to afford a VR kit? Cheapest I've seen still cost upwards of $600 for a single set. Thats a month and half's worth of pay for me... :(

I mean, even the HTC Vive costs something like $800 right now. I also keep seeing these things marketed for everyone to enjoy, with tons of games wanting to add VR support, but at that kind of price? Holy crap no way is it for your every day gamer.

I mean, at that price, I could buy a new key board, a new mouse, a new monitor, a brand new GPU, and still have some left over to get a nice dinner or two. :( I mean, I can't even afford a  GTX950 ffs...

Dunno...maybe its just me...I play a lot of flight sims (DCS and Rise of Flight) and would love to be able to play them in VR, but such is the ways of barely being independent and having to pay bills... >~<

And before anyone says "get a new job then" The only jobs around me that would allow me to buy this kind of stuff, require me to either have a degree from a 4 year college AND 2 or more years of training in that field plus on the job experience FIRST, or require me to work out of state once a week and about 80 hours per week, essentially killing any time I'd have to actually sit down and play anything at all. I know. I had a job like that before. Ended up getting hurt on the job and going to the ER because of it.

So yeah....just venting I guess.... I just see all these youtube videos of VR games and its awesome, but when I look up the prices it likes "holy fudge cakes batman!"

So yeah, ignore this kitsune's ramblings... I'm tired...>.>

Track IR adds a ton of immersion. Give it a go if you haven't already. Much more affordable.

The hype is as real of me getting the VR kits as I am getting the GTX 1060 - IOW nope. I'm broke. If you want to create a hype, at least make it affordable. But these companies obviously don't care.

Cant afford it. Trackir 5 costs $150. Thats about what a GTX950 costs, and I can't afford that either.

I have a R7 260x, and even though its good for what it is, compared to even a GTX950, its way worse. My best friend just upgraded to a 950 and can now play a ton of games at 3x better fps than I can, and we have nearly identical computers aside from the GPU. (we actually have the exact same CPUs oddly enough lol) This only serves to make me want a 950 even more, but I keep remembering I can't afford one. :(

There are times I think about robbing a bank, but then I remember I'm much too lazy for that lol

I bought into VR once I had the chance to play with the Rift a few times over the last few years. I played it initially at GDC 2013 (first guy in line!!!). It was ok back then and got even better over time. I had to do plenty of saving to afford it. It paid off though. I'm enjoying it. Is it a game changer? Nope. It is really cool to have and an awesome new experience? Yes. You also have to keep in mind, all of these sets will come down in price and get even better.

True, but as someone who plays a lot of flight sims, but can't afford decent head tracking gear, it'd be a game changer for me. As it stands, I use a "hacked" PS3 EYE and a free face tracking software to get head tracking working in DCS...and its not the best... I just doubt that VR will go down enough for most people to be able to get it. I mean, I wouldn't even be able to run the VR anyway, because my computer doesn't quite match the recommended specs. (for the occulus anyway. Haven't checked the vive's specs)

I'm not here to be insensitive to your work and living situation, as I have been jobless and struggled to feed my family and pay my mortgage not as far back as six years ago. It was a hard time to get through but I'm in a much better place now...

..with that said, if they only work you can do around where you live is paying you that measely amount of money, don't you think perhaps it's time to move to somewhere where you can work and be afforded some quality of life to do the things you enjoy?   You live in a big country, as do I, where opportunity for those willing to work is around.  Perhaps not right where you live, but perhaps somewhere that isn't super far.

Maybe you are happy living the simple life, but it doesn't sound like you are.  Nobody is going to change that for you, only you can change that for you.   Sounds to me like believing in yourself and motivating yourself to take those steps is your first order of business.   Nobody is going to show up on your door one day with a 60,000 a year job offer, you need to go get it.

..anyways, that's all said out of love..and not meant to be derogatory to you in any way.

..and yes, VR is too expensive, as is many new technologies when they hit. This will go two ways.. companies will decide it's not worth their time to make because nobody is buying it at the price it costs, or, they will believe in it and find ways to make it cheaper and more accessible to the masses...  nobody thinks too much about buying $1000 TVs, once it hits mainstream (if it does) people will pay for it.

Personally waiting for a wider FOV for a VR headset like the StarVR headset, but then again it looks to be more expensive...  But hopefully it is cheaper and less taxing than a 2D/3D surround gaming setup.

Exactly what Niko said, just wait a bit and the price will go down a lot. Do keep in mind, VR is very new and many people want to get theirs ASAP.. therefore, resources are low and the price must be raised higher.

I'd say wait until 2018-2020, the price should be around $250-300 by then.

Virtual Reality, as in a Virtual Reality headset(VR headset).

An example of a company that designs and produces them would be the recently purchased-by-Facebook Oculus VR and their Oculus Rift headset.

Believe me, I've tried moving, but everywhere I've looked so far is a no go (not meaning I'm giving up mind you) I've even looked so far as to moving across country (I love on the east cost in eastern PA atm) I've attempted to find jobs so I could have that waiting for me right away, but nothing has come of it so far (no one has called me back yet, and when I follow up, they say they're still deciding or that they've already hired someone) and every where else I've looked so far has costed too much to move to.

Believe me, I've looked. Thats not happening any time in the near future unless a miracle happens.

I guess the good thing is though, is my current job is actually looking into training me for a manager position, which means a few more hours and a slighter higher pay. Just don't know when it'll happen however.

Well, for what it's worth, the GTX-950 is phenomenal for the price.  Especially one the of up-rated, third-party versions (EVGA, etc.).  Those cost about 10 or 20 bucks more, but still...

Retail. Like I said, its about the only job around me that doesn't require 4 years of college + 2 or more years of tech school and at least 2 years of on the job experience and and also doesn't require 80 hour work weeks. I'm fine with working 40 hours a week, but there isn't anything like that around me so I don't have much choice atm

However, thats not to say I don't like my current job. In fact, its probably my favorite job I've ever had. One of my dreams is to even open my own store in the future. :)

I have a policy about being an early adopter: let other people do it.

Not only will the units be cheaperin a year or two, the state of the art will move up, so when Niko needs to get the "new thing" in two years time, you can but his current set up off craigslist / ebay/ Amazon for

Kitsune...get a part time second job, sometimes it helps, it can be amazing what a few extra hours of pay can afford you to buy.  It will still allow you some free time and help you get some of those desired items.  Just a thought.

Good luck with hopefully getting a better job (or better pay), I wouldn't have anything to recommend since I'm pretty sure it's illegal for me to work, but don't worry, we'll flight sim on the cheap together! ^_^

Kitsune, I was a piece of crap with no direction or plans for the future. the US Navy changed the heck out of that. I left there with a solid education and haven't looked back since. The world's your oyster. Own it.
