Damage model explanation please?

Could someone explain this, because I am at a loss. 

 

First we have the Max HP damage for an HE shell on the St.Louis of 2100...

And now we have the following (and it was NOT a detonation, just a one shell hit)...

What makes you think that was not a detonation? Would you please share your replay file?

If a single shell hit does proportionally that much damage - far exceeding that shell's damage potential - and finishes him off, you can be sure you detonated him.

I'm sure this is caused by the overpowered detonation hack, which causes the enemy to blow up spontaneously.

There was no detonation alert in chat.  Sadly I cannot offer a replay because I just now noticed the last update nuked my replays but I checked and double checked and no alert in chat.

 

But DAMN... the St. Louis is fun!

Only way 1 HE shell can do that is a detonation unless it counts fire damage in that total.

If you're 100% sure that it's not a detonation, it has to be a bug or something.

You detonated him.  Accept it and move on.
