EP:62  US Cruiser Line split.

American Light cruisers... Dallas..Got to be a paper paper ship if not an out right invented by the artist teams.   Most likely a 4 twin turret using the same turrets at the Omaha and dumping the Omaha's sponson mounts. Conversly it could be a "short hulled" Brooklyn/Cleveland with three triple turrets with prewar style s DP secondaries in unturretted single mounts with smaller AA being say 4 Chicago organs and a bunch of .30-.50 machine guns..   I'm real sure it won't be a Brooklyn which would be just too OP at tier 6 with 15 guns with out a lot of nerfage to the main guns.  St.Louis class Helena is a good fit at tier 7.  Bear in mind that even with her full mid war AA (she went down in 1943 in battle) her AA is going to be only about 2/3rd that of the current tier 6 Cleveland).  Cleveland I can see getting a buff to gun range and improved AA numbers (to tier 8 values)  but really doesn't need much else changed though I could see radar available for this ship and all light cruisers from tier 8 forward as a consumable option. Not sure about the tier 9.  Improved Cleveland?  Most likely. though possibly she could be a design study that was done that led up to the tier X CL which was built.  The Wo at tier X.. yea.. that's gonna be a nasty boat.. however be aware historically she was supposed to pump out 12 RPM per gun but she never actually achieved that in practice.  (I suspect a issue in the ability to get rounds fed to the guns..Someone will dig out why out why no doubt) but on the other hand off Korea where she saw action in the 50's she was very well regarded for the accuracy of her guns when providing naval gunfire support.  The U.S.Marines and UN forces I understand were very impressed with just how accurate the Wo's gun fire was and was known for landing the very first salvo dead on target and walking them to where ever the forward controller wanted them next.  So I'm hoping that WG chooses to reflect that in the game but giving her a ROF of 6 to 8 RPM per gun but long ranged and very low dispersion, and an amazingly good sigma value... (2.1+ sigma?  Shiney!).  Turns it into a ship that really rewards a good gunner.. (kind of like ohhhh the Katori!) of course the down side would be that if your aim is not spot on.. your going to miss!  Dispersion is not going to get you those blue moon shots.  Make her an expert players ship!

US Light cruisers though...no smoke please!   The US ship meta all ready hands them an edge in firepower and AA output, and I just don't see the light cruisers getting smoke not stepping well in to OP land.  The US ships are over all going to be marginally tougher then the UK cruiser line simply due to them being bigger ships!.

Episode 63: A Plethora of New Ships!

Hi Listeners! We are back for another episode of the Warships Podcast and we have plenty of topics to cover. The Let's Battle Tour event at USS Lexington was a success and Wargaming's Sub Octavian came to visit. Where he revealed some new information on the future of USN carriers and cruisers.

Getting right into show topics, the crew sets off with the topics of the LBT. Discussing USN CV changes and carrier module choice in general or now, lack there of. The news about the USN cruiser split was also discussed as the news from LBT had much to talk about.

Sailing right along, the cast gets into a plethora of new premium ships that are being tested. The first of which is the Huang He, a Chinese light cruiser that the cast has been testing for awhile but now has the addition of a smoke option. The podcast gives their thoughts and moves onto the new tier 6 German (Dutch designed) Destroyer, KMS T-61. After this, the next premium, the tier 7 HIJMS Ashitaka is discussed and the use of the old stock hull ships leads to a debate on their use. Rounding out our new premiums the crew brings up the tier 7 RM Duca delgi Abruzzi. The discussion of this ship brings a debate on cruiser life and the future of Italian ship lines and what that national flavor might be.

Moving full steam ahead, the show finishes out with our Quick Hits, bringing up points on; Offical Wargaming Stream starting Friday, World of Warships now available on Steam, USS Indianapolis is for sale again, Patch 6.14 is being tested, and the new changes that brings. The show finishes with the topic of further testing to KMS Graf Zeppelin, and the cast brings up CV expert Farazelleth who did an amazing write up, analysis, and opinion piece on reddit. While on the topic of carriers, recent changes to destroyer AA has led to a further power creep in Anti Air capability leaving CV players with harder choices to make when attacking, and the crew again discusses the impact that this has on the game.

Thank you listeners so much for your continued support and we will see you next cast!

Episode 66: Roma, Duke of York, Salem, Aigle, and... BattleshipMaine?

Hi listeners! In this weeks episode of the Warships Podcast, we have special guest Battleship Maine. He has helped to foster and expand our community by making the World of Warships NA Discord server. Kelorn interviews Maine about his involvement in the Warship's Community and how he came to make the Discord server.

In the meantime, Maine brought questions from this Discord channel to ask the Podcast Crew. We answered several questions like our favorite ships, thoughts on Clan Wars, thoughts about increased Tier 6 premiums being introduced, and what our plans were for December in Warships.

The cast moves into the main topics of discussion for this week and that is the four new ships being tested currently. RM Roma Tier 8 BB, HMS Duke of York Tier 7 BB, USS Salem Tier 10 CA, and Aigle Tier 6 DD. These ships were provided to the crew members to test and are subject to change. We first talk about RM Roma, a ship that many players are looking forward to, and special guest Battleships Maine helps add to this conversation by discussing a bit of history and insight to the ship. We move on to the other battleship being tested, HMS Duke of York. Where a debate about battleship role and its ability to tank and heal is discussed. Rounding out the new ship chat, we cover USS Salem which is a sister ship to USS Des Moines and very similar is play style and setup. Last covered is the French Destroyer Aigle. It is comparable to some of the Russian Large Destroyers seen in the game and the cast discusses those DD tactics.

The Quick Hits for this week cover: HMAS Vampire being offered via missions for free for players who grind out the challenge mission. The USS Texas funding aid helped raise 250k to help restore and keep the ship around for all of us to enjoy. Testing on the PTS for patch 6.15 is up and players are encouraged to try out and test the new content before live release.

Thank you everyone for your continued support of this Podcast and the Warships Community. See you next cast!

Trevzors and KamiSamurai get to add their prospective this time around and much discussion and debate abounds.

To recap the questions from the last round table. Here is the list:

  • What was the best and worst thing implemented by Wargaming in 2017?
  • What was the most controversial thing implemented by Wargaming in 2017? and the follow on of, how was it resolved?
  • What's the biggest priority for 2018 in your mind?
  • Were Clan Battles successful in their first season?

Just Listened to the year end podcast with Trevsor.

I disagree with the guest on the issue of player time. A game that is contently running time limited events that demand a players full time attention is a game that risks burning out its player base. The fact we even have to talk about 'Burn Out' should be a red flag to everyone. The last season of Rank was what back in July/August? Than we get Clan Battles in November/December and just at the point when everyone could take a breather and focus on the Holidays and the WoWs seasonal events, WHAM! Rank. A game mode that is a black hole that sucks the life out of a captain by way of the grind stone. More and more I'm convinced WG doesn't have a lot of value for its players time. If I had a more demanding job I would not be playing Rank. Heck if I get the Black I may never play it again. I think there should be down time between events, no more than a week or two. But only put one thing on the players plate at a time. This over loading is very likely to drive players away. Even players who have been here for a while.

I face palmed more times listening to this podcast than any other in recent memory.

*giggles uncontrollably* Darnit, I know there was something I forgot to do today!

Hey yea.. DD specialist.   Cruisers are in short supply.. Lots of matched here at rank 10 no cruisers to be seen.  DD's and BB's.   Seeing Lo Yangs, Gearing's occasional Ognivoi and Kiev.  The german DD's are not doing to badly.  We IJN drivers are getting to play with Akizuki, Kagero's and Harekaze's and in the hands of a decent player they're a serious threat.  I've been running the HSF Harekaze for most of the current season (occasional runs in the Kagero..Leaving the Aki in port.. to slow, to vulnerable the way I play)  and she's been performing well.  Mostly though the ubiquitous Gearing is the DD to be seen.  The pan Asian ships have been the DD wild horse this season.. Just depends on the driver!

The one thing I see in the matches I win is the winning trams leave their ego's out of the match.  They also communicate with each other in the match for specialized capabilities and intentions.. and last of all, they are flexible and are able to adjust when the initial plan fails which in inevitably does at some point if the other team is any good at all!  The most difficult part players seem to have problems with is with only 7 ships per side there is no room for indecision.  Every single ship counts from the moment the battle starts.  No player can sit back and "wait for things to develop"   as most battle are determined within the first half of the match if not the first 5 minutes!  If you don't hesitate you MIGHT drive into more then you can handle.  If you do hesitate you will miss the opportunity to whats need to be done to win.  I've seen that so many times that I can almost predict at the 5 min mark which team is going to win.   Get that fire power up where it can do the most good ya know? Nothing counts other then a win.  Not ship losses, damage delt cap scored or defended.  None of it.  Only winning no matter how tidy or sloppy in the achievement of that goal.

Episode 70: King of the Seas talks Battle of the Atlantic

Hi listeners, for this weeks episode of the Warship's Podcast we have two new guests. Domin1c and Eclaire from the EU Community come aboard to tell us about the new King of the Sea / Supremacy League Battle of the Atlantic Tournament. Which will showcase a new competitive scene going forward. The cast and crew talk about the change to Tier 10 from Tier 8 of the previous seasons as well as the inclusion of carriers.

A debate on carrier inclusion is held and the potential for the USS Midway to be a viable option is also debated. With the addition of carriers to the mix, changes to competitive meta also change. We have a discussion on how cruisers, battleships, and destroyers will have to respec and setup to address aircraft and spotting mechanics. Smoke might make a return and impact but the game play of spotting and vision will be key.

The podcast continues to sail along, switching topics to the new premium ships that have been released. These ships include HIJMS Musashi and RM Roma as well as the High School Fleet collection. The show debates Musashi, Tier 9 and Tier 10 and the affect this ship has on the game. Roma is also discussed and the unique Kobayashi camo that is now an option.

Rounding out this weeks show, the cast and crew touch on the new Emblems that have been added to the game. Which helps to add a bit of end game content and form of visible achievements into a match, and last but certainly not least, the favorite subject of Ranked is discussed. The podcast team and guest give their current thoughts and experiences about the season and what has transpired so far.

Thank you everyone for supporting and listening to our show. We very much look forward to seeing you next cast!

Episode 73: Aerroon returns to talk Monaghan, Asashio, Gascogne, and Clan Battles

Hi listeners! For this weeks episode of the Warships Podcast, we have the return of EU Contributor Aerroon. Normally the podcast would have Aerroon on for a pre Ranked Season break down, however this time he is joining us for post Ranked results. The cast does a quick interview to catch up with Aerroon, and see what he has been doing since the last time he was on the show before diving straight into our topics.

Our first topic of discussion is a plethora of new premium ships including the USS Monaghan, HIJMS Asashio, Gasconge, as well as Dev Blog ships Z 39 and Kronstadt. The USS Monaghan and HIJMS Asashio are both new destroyers being tested and the cast members give their current opinions on the work in progress ships. Moving on to the Gasconge, a ship that was previously discussed on the show. The crew talks about the changes and whether it is enough to make it a better or more competitive ship than it was in its previous iteration. The podcast crew also discusses the latest information shown form the World of Warships Dev Blog which showcased two new ships. The German Destroyer Z 39 and the Russian Cruiser Kronstadt. Both ships are debated but the Kronstadt in particular drew speculation and discussion towards another ship the cast would like to see, the USS Alaska and/or USS Guam. Sailing right along, the show gets into the post Ranked Season discussion. Debating and parsing the Tier 8 Ranked Season and each member going over how they felt and what observations they had while playing. The noted differences between all the servers and the strengths and weaknesses of some ships played through, which in particular were ships, HMS Edinburgh, VMF Chapayev, USS New Orleans, and Lo Yang. Talk on the topic of radar and sonar is held and a discussion about the frustrations players had this season was also noted.

The podcast finishes the show by discussing the next Clan Battles season. Which will have very similar rules and match sets as the previous first season. The French Battleship line launch is imminent and the crew discusses one of the new unique ways that you could possible earn access to the ships early. Thank you to everyone who listens and supports this show! We sincerely look forward to having you again on the Warships Podcast.
