Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I seem to be getting very poor HE shell damage with my Cleveland. What is the usual shell damage you get firing HE at a BB? I just finished a game with 51 HE hits to a new mexico, but only 3088 dmg. That's 61 dmg per shell, while the maximum damage is listed as 2200. I of course also started a bunch of fires, but I'm curious how much damage is typical? I don't remember the Pheonix or Omaha having this problem, but maybe it my imagination.... Any help?

Thx

If the shells don't hit the superstructure they aren't going to do much damage

Without any additional information I'm going to assume you were hitting the same spot of the ship over and over again. Areas of the ship have a certain saturation damage and once you take all that number off the ship you're not going to do any more damage.

if you're hitting the hull of a BB with HE, it's going to do minimal to no damage. you have to hit the superstructure/deck.

another possible explanation is damage saturation, but i don't know quite enough about that mechanic to explain it with words.

Once I saw the title, I was already guessing that you had trouble HE spamming New Mexico. Haha and I am right.

New Mexico might have some really strong superstructure that resists low-caliber HE shells really well. I once spammed HE with my Gnevny on the ship and also did very little damage. The only reliable damage you can do is actually through fire on that ship.

Then don't forget you still have AP. Your AP on the suprstructure will do over-pen damage which actually accumulates quite fast. If the New Mexico is showing broadside to you, you can use AP on the top edge of his hull(not the belt, too thick to penentrate unless you close in the distance). You will do a lot of penetration damage there. 2000+ damage per salvo is not rare even from distance.

I dusted off the Cleveland this weekend after a few months of hiatus with her and was averaging between 2-4k of HE damage on well placed full salvos on BB's.

If you're not seeing at least 4-digit damage on a full HE broadside, you're not aiming at the proper area(s) of the enemy ship.

I see. I hadn't tried AP on BB´s... I assumed there was no chance to do dmg. Will have to give that a shot. Thanks! Also I was probably remembering some video stating that you should aim for the ends of the ship, not the superstructure... which may not be the way to go on every ship.

Or shooting the wrong type of ammo. As mentioned above, better to rack up overpen damage than saturate an area with HE

You will only get 33% of listed damage per HE shell for non-citadel penetrating hits. To get a penetrating hit, the armor it hits must not be thicker than 1/6th of the shell's caliber (150/6 = 25mm).

To get full damage, your HE shell must penetrate the citadel. In most cases it is impossible for your 6" guns to achieve, unless you hit the deck of certain low tier cruisers or into certain CVs.

Armor thicker than 1/6th = no penetration = no damage. But the splash damage can still incapacitate modules or start fires.
