So, after much wheedling with the missus and some chores that I'm pretty sure are illegal in 48 out 50 states, I was able to get the Sims/Yubari combo for the birthday.  I've played a few games in her and I'm starting to get a feel for her.  Thought I'd pass the impressions along.

So far, I like her.  She feels like a sawed off Atlanta.  I love her speed, but the much lauded rudder time and turn radius seem a little crank to me.  That will probably change as I get more used to her.  The acceleration seems to be unimpressive given her size and power, but I have the steering gears mod installed.  I may try the propulsion mod and see if that helps.  I usually do steering, but the rudder time is so quick anyways that I'm wondering if I won't get a better deal on the trade off.

The guns are remarkably similar in performance to the Atlanta, though naturally shorter range.  The arc and flight time feel the same.  You still have to anticipate the target to a larger degree with lead than other guns, even the Benson or the Mahan.  The damage seems a little underwhelming and almost no fires.  Even against other DD's I don't seem to get much out of them.

Durability wise, she's better than I expected.  She loves to crap out engine parts off the stern when hit there.  I've had more of those, by far, than I have of a rudder jam.  She seems to handle over pens better than the Mahan, the benefit of having no armor...

The torpedoes...  Well there's crap and then there the turd with a propeller called the Bliss Leavitt Mark 7 2B.  I think the crap would be a better option.  Seriously?  49kts at 9.2 for 8500 damage?  The Mk 15 that comes standard is an ok torpedo, but still not much better.  65kts is not bad, but the 116000 damage is pretty anemic and 5.5 range is disappointing.  But, hey, short range is pretty much the standard MO until the upgraded Mahan.

I'll certainly keep playing her, she's fun.  Hopefully, I can get a better feel for her as we continue to court each other (don't tell the wife).

I know good Sims captains are scary customers.

Had one game where we never saw him until the very end when he was just one of two red ships left alive.

Before that it was just invisi-firing and invisi-torps.

Because apparently the Mk15 torps are that much different despite having the same designation. And therefore all USN stuff should be wonky and not have the same stats due to vodka logic involved.

Yeah Sims is very good with that 18RPM, and sluggish on turning like a typical USN DD. Torps are fairly bad, but I say you get the guns in exchange for it.

I'm enjoying the Sims so far. It's got the better guns off Benson, and the ability to mount defensive fire instead of engine boost. I think that's a useful trade, as it's saved me and my companion battleship's bacon more than once.

Definitely ditch the rudder shift upgrade and get acceleration. Stock rudder shift is 2.7 seconds, it needs no buffing whatsoever.

As for the torpedoes? Yeah, stick with the short range ones. It's really not worth it to have those long range ones that are basically mines.

I'm not a marriage counselor, but maybe you should spend more time strengthening that relationship.

Just sayin.  :aqua:

Otherwise, this confirms why I'm not going to pick up the Sims.  Overall feels underwhelming.  Unlike the Bly, where I feel like a gun powerhouse in that thing.

The Sims is basically a more gunboat-y Mahan that trades in the guns for the torps. Blyska is the all-round winner in gunnery duels.

Sorry I won't be getting it either.  Im at the Fletcher and no point of me needing a US DD trainer when I can use a Marblehead,Albany, and my beta.

But it is one ship that can do both easily. I would always treat Sims captains with respect because I knew they had them for a long time.

Now, of course, it will be harder to tell the experienced.

In all seriousness, I have an amazingly beautiful wife who puts up with far too much of my oddities than she really should have to.  She's not a gamer, so she just rolls her eyes and lets me be.  Most of the time.

Not saying the Sims can't be great, hell, look at my signature.  I suck as a player....  I'm more than happy to be wrong in this.  I just hope I can give something of a different perspective from my 20/20 hindsight of why I suck.

I kinda think of the Sims as a Farragut on steroids.  Everything is a little better than the Farragut, 1 less gun, though a higher RoF.  Yes, the base torps have a little shorter range (5.5 km) than the Farragut's best (6.4 km) torps, but that doesn't bother me much particularly since the other Sims torps are so crappy.

I honestly don't find the Sim "underwhelming".  It seems like a fun little DD to me, though it would be nice if the devs would give it a buff in the torpedoes (perhaps just give the Sims the Farragut's best torps, the Mahan's stock torps, i.e. the 6.4 km ones).

A lot depends on your play style with the Sims (and other mid tier USN DD's like the Farragut and Mahan).  If you ever like to come to a full stop and use (offensive) smoke, the propulsion mod that improves your acceleration comes in EXTREMELY handy for when you have to kick it up to full speed and run away.

I only recently started using this propulsion mod, and I can tell you that it makes a VERY noticeable difference in a DD's acceleration.  And I haven't felt that the minor loss of rudder response by giving up the rudder mod was that big a deal.

Never thought of that aspect. I've been using the steering gears mod and she turns on a dime. I have to try the propulsion mod, now. +1

Well, if I remember right, the steering mod is -20% of the existing rudder shift time.  So, 20% of 2.9 is something like 0.58 (call it .6) seconds.  So, roughly 2.3 seconds for the shift.  I'll take the 2.9 if I can get -50% off the time to get to full power.  Thanks for the insight.

I think the issue I have is that you can easily compare the sims to a farragut, or a mahan, or other mid-line US DD.  There isn't a differing enough trait to say "Wow, the Sims excels and stands out differently from other US DDs because of XXXXX".

Never thought of that aspect. I've been using the steering gears mod and she turns on a dime. I have to try the propulsion mod, now. +1

I started using the propulsion mod about rank 8 in Ranked and I'm LOVING the change in play-ability.  My increased ability to dodge torps with front/back motion and to get out of dodge or into my smoke is extremely noticeable.

Coming from the Cruiser line, and having worked my way up in Destroyers, the Sims has been the most fun for me.  I've taken the steering upgrade, though it seems that is what gets damaged the most frequently.  I wonder if those that have the propulsion upgrade seem that is damaged more often?  I have to agree on the torpedoes, having kept the stock version which work fine in close quarters combat, although I still miss half the times or more with them, especially within the 4-5 km range.  Overall, this for me is a good little ship, and it's always gives me good stats in battle.

stock steering is 2.7 sec.  no need to upgrade it so I got propulsion upgrade.     I am also using AA mod   with     DF.   might as well.  even though I havn't run into a CV yet in 5 battle.

i am an original Sims owner from Beta and i prefer the upgraded torp's now yes they are slow but you can fire them while remaining invisible and that is a HUGE benefit IMO and at close range really only another DD can dodge them. so i would take the slower less DMG torps for being able to surprise BB captains without being spotted.

i do like the advise about taking the acceleration upgrade over the steering mod, i hadn't thought about that so will be giving it a try, see even old captains can learn something from reading the forums lol

The Sims gave me my first 18 point Captain, just under 400 games it's my most played ship.

I use the 9.2 Klm torps, whilst they only do tickle damage they are quite stealthy and not always expected.

New propulsion mod is the one to get. 2.7 sec rudder time is more than quick enough.

BFT gets you 20rpm, a CE build captain gets you 6.6 Klm detection and invisifire from 10.6klm.

Torp reload is quick enough, last stand is a must also.

With the tier 4 manual AA skill, defensive AA planes are not that much of a problem.

Builds can differ slightly depending on what you want to achieve

'Overall I have enjoyed the Sims and have performed above the server average (ok it's fairly low anyway) but for my level of expectation and skill I do fine. Most of all I had FUN playing Sims.
