I had been hoing and humming about it for awhile and I have a few Tier 9's in my port (had an Izumo, have an Iowa, Kagero and a Dimi). However, I didn't know which one to choose. I am really close to a Moskva in regular XP and was sitting on about 125k free xp, which was enough to power through to the Yamato. Well, let me say that I am glad that I bought her. She is nothing less than pure fun. 201k on my very first match and I even brawled another Yamato, scoring a citadel against it in CQB. For anyone interested. Here is the replay. If long range to you is 20km and the stock max range is 26km, yet the secondaries start lighting up at 10.4, that doesn't leave me with a lot of options, let alone room to maneuver. I don't have a definitive answer to the question, and I doubt anyone does... I noticed that Yamato is at her most dangerous between 15 and 16 km, much like e.g. Amagi, barring brawling which is a matter of personal preference. On the other hand, you can't always be this close to potential torpedo and HE threats from which you cannot pull back once committed (Amagi doesn't have this problem). Wish I could rank out, still stuck at 9. But, I did manage to get enough XP tonight to research Yamato and have the credits to purchase it. I'll save that fun for tomorrow.
