Is it just me? Am I alone in thinking the ships just feel really small. It's just always felt like the scale was off.

Funny you should mention the scale in this way, I think it is the exact opposite. In relation to the maps and the towns on the maps the ships are gigantic, they can be longer than some towns!

Switch your port to New York or Zipang, or sail near the main spawn islands on the Neighbours map. Then you'll feel big.

Ships are 4 times larger than they should be. Those battleships you're shooting at 16km, that's what they'd look like if they were actually only 4km away.

Ships are huge compared to the environment so that matches don't last 5 times longer.

 

Ship to ship scale is correct, it sometimes just appears to be off due to distortion from camera perspective.
