Sitting at work counting the hours I thought to myself...

Man I would love if my ship took on water, no not just the flooding icon, I would love to see my ship limping somewhat submerged after taking on water. This to me would really add to that immersion especially in a battleship after a hard long fight.

Or mast broken things like that. Hopefully something in the works.

Did they try something like that back in Alpha though?

I'd like to see something like this as well.

They could start with something simple like having ships list to the side they take torpedo hits on for the rest of the match.  If a significant percentage of HP has been lost to flooding damage, the ship could ride lower in the water and raise back up somewhat after the use of a repair party to represent the water getting pumped back out.

My understanding is there was a buoyancy bar seperate from HP back in early Alpha that was removed on account of being "too complicated for players to grasp" :sceptic:

What I'd like to see would be purely visual and should work fine with the current damage model.

either I don't remember it, or it was in and out so quick I didn't even notice it.

But I'm with you, purely visual.

I like the general idea, but then I think we are getting closer to realism and further from arcade style which is what the game is situated around. If you are listing to the port and showing a port broadsides, does that make it harder or easier for you to get citadeled? Is it harder to hit your super structure to set fires? Do bombs still drop accurately? Do you turn much slower to avoid more torps? There are a lot of things to consider when you try to implement new things. This is a big reason the biggest cosmetic change (death role) happens when the player is dead and the hull only stops torps for so long.

Not to mention if you're firing from the side you're listing to. Does the shots still go, or are they donked into the water?

personal opinion, lets not dive into the physics and keep it strictly visual. Me personally just want it for that immersion. I want to feel like I just barely survived and ship is taking on water and not affect the actual gameplay. Too many people would just moan about how they can't play anymore. NOW ON THE OTHER SIDE, I would love an entirely different mode known as simulation mode 2 ships going at each other's throat down to 1 gun half submerged... that would be amazing sort of like that other game with the exact same model as WG that also has a sim mode and arcade. You know the one with all the thundering storms.

But for this thread visual only taking on water.

Yeah, there are just a lot of issues with a seemingly simple cosmetic change. Does it also mess with top speed, turning, % chance to re flood if hit in the same areas etc.

Asking for an entirely different mode when they are already taking months to add new nations to the tree is unrealistic on so many levels.

Here is a great thread that goes into detail on the progression of the game from the very beginning.

There have been a few other more in-depth explanations of the buoyancy system, but I'd have a hard time finding them.  Basically it didn't work as intended, but I'm still disappointed they chose to simply remove it rather than work toward a more elegant solution that achieves playability without the sacrifice of depth.

You do bring up a good point about some other considerations that would accompany a listing mechanic.  While I am admittedly among those who wish this game leaned just a bit less toward the arcade side of the spectrum, I believe an ideal balance can be reached.

As long as ships don't list more from flooding than they already do during a hard turn, how they react to incoming fire shouldn't change too drastically.  I would however draw the line on listing affecting handling characteristics or gun elevation.  That might be a little too much to grasp for now, but perhaps later on could be considered.  One step at a time.

it may be unrealistic, but it doesn't stop me from wanting a simulation mode. :child:

Nice, and it would lower your citadels too
