It could have a small benefit for players with high positive karma. For example, having high karma could give a small credits or experience boost. Maybe giving positive commendations could have an affect on karma. Really, anything to incentivize an otherwise pointless system.

It is merely an expression of how well or poorly you are doing overall based on reports/compliments of the other random players you battle with Do well it goes up poorly it goes down if players take the time to report or compliment post battle. You could very easily sink all 12 enemy ships and loss karma points by being reported by the other 23 players

There was somebody who a few months ago suggested that they change the reporting system so that only the top five players on a team (at the end of a battle) are allowed to submit negative reports about a player ("plays poorly") while anyone be allowed to submit compliments. I think that's a good idea.

I previously thought something like this would be a good idea, but I've since changed my mind. Having Karma influence the game positively or negatively would result in people trying to "farm" Karma. There was somebody who a few months ago suggested that they change the reporting system so that only the top five players on a team (at the end of a battle) are allowed to submit negative reports about a player ("plays poorly") while anyone be allowed to submit compliments. I think that's a good idea. According to that thinking a normally helpful and valuable player could be team killed right at the start of the match and the person who TK'ed him could go on to score in the top five. That would allow the TK'er to report the guy he team killed while only allowing the person who was TK'ed the option of complementing the TK'er. A normally helpful and valuable player could be maneuvering and dodging torpedoes only to be cut off by some one not paying attention, getting the former player killed and protecting the player who was not paying attention and whom the torpedoes were likely aimed at to begin with. If the former had not had time to do a lot of damage and the other lives long enough to score in the top five, again, the latter could report the former and the former could only complement the latter. Likewise, being a good player and being a completely self-centered, self-serving jerk are not mutually exclusive. Just because you do well in a battle does not mean your opinion is more valuable than the honest evaluation of someone who did not do as well. I understand the underlying reasoning, but it is a horrible idea. If you are a good player/teammate, you will get more complements than reports. If you are a bad player/teammate, you will get more reports than complements. There is no reason to only let "the cool kids," so to speak, be able to voice discontent.
