Back in the water again, looking for a ship

So, I've been offline for the most part since right after closed beta ended. I'm sure there have been many changes since then.

I'm looking to get back into it, and looking to go up the IJN Destroyer line up to probably about tier 5 or so for fairly casual play.

So far I am poking around co-op games in the Umakazie at tier 2, working on unlocking hull 2 and the second set of torps.

I know in tanks that people frequently over tier themselves and end up a detriment to their teams. Generally speaking what's a good metric to track to judge when to tier up?

Are their particularly good ships in this line? I've read about the tier 4 and 5, they sound fun.

Basically I've been out of the loop for quite a while, and have been spoiled by wotwiki into being able to look everything up easily.

The tier 4 IJN DD is the Isokaze and in my opinion is the second most fun ship to play in the entire game (with the first being the tier 5 IJN DD, the Minekaze).

It is a true beast (also called the murder boat). I am a slightly below average player, but in the Isokaze, I get a 4-5 kill game once a week or so. Usually get first blood and 2-3 devastating strikes per game. Last night, I had 16 torp hits with 15 floodings and Confederate.

I stay in the 4-6 tier range for the most part. The ships are more fun and the games a little softer (meaning, I do better). This range also includes the two best cruisers (in my opinion), the US Cleveland and the German Nurnberg. And my favorite BB (the IJN Kongo).

OgreMKV has it right. The Isokaze and Minekaze are keepers for sure.

But if you played during closed beta then you know the game. I am sure the updates changed some things and rebalanced what you were used to but I wouldn't think you could over tier yourself. Just grind back thru the IJN DD line to the Minekaze and you should be fine. At tier 6 the play style changes a bit. Just have fun and will see you in battle sometime!

For IJN DD line T4 and T5 are very good, T6 and T7 are not very good, and then T8-T10 are very good again (I should say T8-T10 were very good, as they just got hit with a considerable change and it's to early to tell the implications). Regarding going up the tiers in any DD line, don't go too high until you're absolutely comfortable with your detection ranges.

Having played 1693 battles since release. I have some experience in ships.

My best ship is Umikazi.

Tier 2,3 & 4 are very good and forgiving destroyers.

Fast torpedo reloads, fast and very stealthy.

The Minekaze was nerfed since beta and has a very narrow stealth torp capability.

Tier 6 + is where it gets a bit rougher as you run into more experienced enemies.

...

I recommend switching over to PVP matches as you have the basics down and the play is more challenging & rewarding.

Welcome back.

IJN DDs have no problems being uptiered. In fact, you can take the T2 Umikaze into a T8 battle with no problems (well, other than the new radar).

Isokaze is absolute fun to play. It's one of my top 3 funniest to play. Minekaze/Kamikaze is great fun too.

The Mut is harder as it's torpedoes are slower loading. You have to be more skillful and planning with your volleys.

Remember your detection range and torpedo range. And don't forget you have guns. Some games in the Isokaze, I do almost as much damage with guns.

The prize/premium Tachibana can be a hoot, the tiny mosquito with the shotgun bite. For IJN DDs that are still accessible, I like the Minekaze (and it's pumpkin and blueberry flavored variants of course.) As said the Mutsuki is harder to work with in the sense it only has TWO, count them, TWO guns, (lovely to come around a corner and find a Russian or Farra there...) but it's torps can be quite useful within their limits.

Best to use Mutsuki as a pure torpedo boat, maximizing your stealth abilities; but do keep in mind it DOES have guns. Saved a cap from a damaged enemy DD once with those two guns. (So slow turning... I'd swear the Japanese maintenance manual for those guns says put sand in the rotation mechanics instead of grease...)

Lol, sand in the gears, gotta love it.

Sounds like I may want to keep at least a few of these. For now, I think I'll stick to the tier 2, going pvp as soon as I have all modules unlocked.

Just keep in mind, that Tier 4-6 is probably the hardest for DDs. (relatively speaking)

The other ship classes are faster and better armed than in low tiers, most players have at least some idea how to counter torps, and you aren't at the high tiers where concealment module and skill become available.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I'm still playing around at tier 2 and 3 for the moment DD wise.

I also have taken the various premiums that I have out for a spin or two. (Arkansas beta, Marblehead from a FB contest, and Murmansk that I got for $1 on a humble bundle).

Having some fun with those too.
