Nothing combines the "scared to death of everything" gameplay with the "offensive impotence" and the (formerly much worse...) astronomical repairs bills in quite the nausea-inducing way that the Baltimore does. I run with Hydro and Radar for DD hunting and then go concealment the rest of the way. It lets you dictate the terms of engagement and allows you to hunt down the enemy DDs pretty well. With the anti-DD/concealment build you pretty much forego the AA, but it's so situational anyway that it's no big loss. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Tactically, your only hope with it was playing it like a mini-Yamato and keeping your nose pointed at the bad guys and praying they had something more interesting to shoot at. Which is rare, because vaporizing Baltimores is good, clean fun... for everybody except the Baltimore. Radar was a good addition. I felt useful once or twice when I would beam a Fletcher or Shima back into existence after they smoked. Apart from that, the gameplay was pretty much: "How long can I hide and not get noticed so that I get a couple of shots into something before I get schwacked?" It isn't just BB's that can schwack you either. The German and Russian Tier 9's are all much better gunships. God forbid a Des Moines or Zao shows up... I saw several Atlantas yesterday attempting to get in range only to become the lead ship on their team and promptly getting focused down. Unless that ship has islands to work with it's pretty useless in any role other than AA escort. It's a real shame the Atlanta is so bad considering people paid real money for that thing. I have both. Every once in awhile, say once every 5 games, the Atlanta can have a stellar game. Blasting a BB a hundred times or so is a riot. Finding that sweet spot behind an island and letting fly for a few minutes at a cruiser whose guns can't hit you back is giggle-inducing fun. The Baltimore has no redeeming value whatsoever. It's just a brutal, boring, painful grind. Not a fun moment to be had. I need a hug. I have Baltimore-induced PTSD now. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

It's utterly s**t if neither side has carriers. Which is often the case in high tier matches. They are pretty good at killing DDs that are within 5 or 6km as the shells won't orbit at that range ... but if you're that close to the line, you're also a prime target for everyone else. That's like playing an Izumo as if it were a Minekaze. The Baltimore was the worst ship I played back in CBT and it looks like things haven't improved at all for it. Fact: the Atlanta has inferior stats to a Tier 5 Cruiser of the same nation Period, the end. It is a piece of garbage, the Baltimore however is somewhat resistant to 8" AP rounds (fact), As well as fight against another Cruiser of it's tier without getting slaughtered The Atlanta can not even truly fight most of the cruisers the tier under it. It is by far, the worst Cruiser in the game. The baltimore is the worst Tier 9(outright) in the game. In addition, the Baltimore with a full stealth build has a lower detection range than the Atlanta. (Despite being something like double the size mind you) So that's a thing. The ship that would cause immediate loss of bowel control in any cruisers unfortunate enough to run into her is no big deal here. Outclassed by ships that in real life didn't exist or really weren't even close to her true greatness. I know what a Baltimore really was, that is good enough for me I guess. However, if it's anything like the New Orleans I'm sure it's a great ship. The stats look like a marked improvement over it's tier 8 predecessor... granted it'll be facing tier X ships. =/ The USN cruisers have a very different play style from their counterparts, you just have to learn their niche.
