Unlocking Upgrades Without Using Ship?

I'm confused, so I just bought the myogi like 3 days ago.  But I haven't even used the ship once in a battle yet, suddenly today, the engine upgrades are ready to be unlocked. How does that happen?

I grinded up IJN CAs first, and when I went up DDs later I've had torpedoes unlocked automatically.

Nope, I haven't EVEN TOUCHED the Myogi at all.  So I didn't put free xp on it manually.

And yes, I'm going up the IJN CV and BB line.  After testing out the Hak and Yamato during public test, I fell in love with those ships.

Free XP is stored for use on any ship and will show things as unlockable if you have enough for the upgrade. Then you use said free XP to research the upgrade, so what you're seeing is your Free XP telling you the upgrade can be unlocked with free XP. You don't have to use the ship to get upgrades(ex. My Shokaku has never been used, but I used free XP to max her out while I train her capt. in my Kamikaze R).

So you haven't actually researched them yet?

 

If you have enough free exp laying around then the modules will display as ready to be researched. If they are greyed out somewhat, you do not have enough exp (normal and free) to research the module. If you are looking at a module that requires another to be researched, it takes that into account.

 

That's really it. There's no differentiation between being able to research fully with normal exp or requiring some free exp. It'll tell you how much normal and free exp you will spend when you click on the module and get the yes/no choice for researching it.

Showing in blue just means ready to research, be it Ship or Free XP. If you haven't used the ship, it's Free XP that's going to be used. You don't assign Free XP to any ships until you actually commit and research the module.

That was a cool aspect about tanks I loved.  Research an engine or gun on one tank, have it already prepped to load onto a different tank.  The lack of shared modules outside of a few torpedoes is kinda bland =/

To be blunt, you're being a bit dim here. Free exp can be used with ANYTHING, so you have null ship exp, congrats, that means there's exactly ONE OPTION as to why it's blue, free XP.

Yeah I am dim LOL.  I did not know that.  I guess I was able to get free XP without using doubloons. Interesting.
