From what little I was reading about this competition it was becoming apparent in the last months that DCNS was taking the lead, but this affair is still... a bit perplexing, especially on the risk side; the Japanese are the only ones who are buying for their naval forces the same exact design that they offered to the Australians, this should be pretty much the ultimate warranty that in case of issues the Japanese will have an interest in finding the solution by themselves, instead of forcing the Australian side to engage in long arguments with the builder, just think of what happened with the Collins class.

Apparently leasing wasn't deemed the correct option... I mean, who wants to lease world-class, world-leading submarines from the #1 super-power on earth? Not me! But rumors were afloat...

Really... would the US behave in such a manner? Under the current administration's control? Heaven no... :-)

ASC Osborne is a fiasco, there are some good people there. Sadly it has a culture of nepotism, blindness to corruption and fails massively in recognising talent or laziness.

Given the current situation I don't think the leasing would have been received well by the USN, they're already having troubles finding enough boats for their own needs.

Well, there's some merit in the argument, not all partners and allies are necessarily trusted in the same measure, it will be interesting to see how things will develop now that the Australians decided against the Soryu.

Well, what with the actions of the Chinese in that part of the world's oceans, it will be interesting to see how it all pans out... The US of course isn't in to selling or leasing current technology, maybe the former generation to be sure... but I really had no idea the French were schooled in the art of submarines, sub warfare and the production of submarines. I must have selective memory loss regarding French submarines.

But from that trusted source wikipedia:

The Barracuda class (or Suffren class) is a new nuclear attack submarine, designed by the French shipbuilder DCNS for the French Navy, replacing the Rubis-class submarines. Construction began in 2007 and the first unit will be commissioned in 2017.

TEN YEARS? Wow... the Australians have plenty of time to mull over their $50BN Au investment then.... I mean if it takes 10 years to complete one unit for the French navy... how long for a foreign customer?

I thought that the Japanese had this sealed and would be if Tony Abott was still in office.  But it was probably the closeness of the Japanese with the former Abott administration that did the deal in once the new PM took power.

In the meantime, this is a Chinese test bed for new sub techs, and its been operational for a few years now.  It appear it can shoot ballistic missiles off the tower and has VLS on the hull for cruise missiles.  Chinese recently showed an export model for a 280km sub launched antiship missile this month on the Malaysian defense expo.  The displacement of the Type 032 is said to be in excess of 6000 tons.

The Scorpene has been one of the best sellers for SSKs in the modern era.  Its probably among the best SSKs out there.  Its main competition is the German Type 214 for national contracts.  Given the track record for the sub, I am not surprised the French would win this.  The Australian contract is for a different sub though.

You know... these days... buying such a weapon of war..  how would you know the builder did not embed some type of one-time use device deep inside the ship which could be triggered remotely to broadcast the ship's location? Or do worse? Does the buyer do electronics' sweeps every day? Hmm...

Thankfully they are diesel electrics :-)

If you are caught doing that, say good bye to your credibility in the international arms market.

Oh for sure... but that would be a WCS (worst case scenario) you see... I'm sure nations have done stupider things :-)

A little surprised the Koreans were bidding for this in partnership with the Germans using the Hyundai built and variants of the Type 214.
