I realize this is something you can only really do in low-mid tiers ,but that's all I'm playing at the moment, and I happen to think it's the most fun in this game..... but I suck at at.

Usually I'll charge right in with speed boost and jink/dodge if I see his guns training on me, then at about 4km I'll pop smoke to mess with his secondaries and  then turn to my side and launch torps....and I've been missing.... a lot.

Any specific techniques that work for you all or is it just a practice thing?

If you miss you either aimed wrong as to where he would be when the torps arrived or he guessed right and dodged well. Torps need a longer lead than shell fire.

Wiggle around. Zigzag. Make yourself hard to hit, quickly turn and spam torps, then wiggle your way back to safety while popping smoke.

Get even closer if you can.  I have killed quite a few BBs in my Isokaze.  Hit top speed and do a lotta swerving.  Players in BBs in low tiers generally are not such good shots and do take advantage of their long reload.  Inside 2-3K it's hard to miss. It CAN be done! Good luck.:honoring:

Wiggle, if they are double turrets try to be in the middle since the shells will go on either side. If you can try to outrace the turret traverse.

1:Run at him head-on to mitigate his gunfire.

2: Wait until his main batteries have fired.

3: Turn when you're close enough that your torps will hit.

4: ????

5: Profit.

That's really a last resort thing. If you must, flanking the enemy fleet will increase your chances of success since they won't see you coming as soon. Do this:

1:Run at him head-on to mitigate his gunfire.

2: Wait until his main batteries have fired.

3: Turn when you're close enough that your torps will hit.

4: ????

5: Profit.

I'm no DD player, but when I see a DD charging my BB head on, I generally try to be as predicable as possible until I see the DD pop smoke or turn broadside.....then I full reverse and hard to port or starboard....watch the torps swim by.

Don't be predictable.....

(I have plenty of DD kills in my BB from that scenario)

If a dd tries that on me I hold my fire until he commits to the turn to fire torps. There is like a split second of them turning and getting the torps off that you can take them out. I do it regularly in my nikolai against clemsons and nicholas that try that.

Every DD player drops torpedoes the instant they're in range.  It's not hard to figure that out, and it's not hard to foil a torpedo attack even at 4km once you know where the DD launched from.

Islands are your friend, use them to approach your victim unseen, pop out and deliver your tuna fish sandwich. Once the delivery is made pop your smoke and wiggle like hell while you make your exit.

I find the best plan is to wait until you see the BB engaging someone else, then come at him from the other direction. Works like a charm for me. Had one game in my Clemson where I sunk 3 BB's that way.

Edit: Please note that this method is for open water areas with no cover. If cover is available, the above post is the best way to go.

Coordinate an attack with an allied cruiser(s) providing covering fire in order to distract the target. Close distance and do not fire with your main armament, as the target would know which direction your shells originate.

Also, having two or more suicidal DDs flanking on opposite sides of the target gives an increased.chance of a torpedo hit.

Even in my example a distracted target is an easier target.

Just siz zag until within range, once within range, pop smoke and if the BB turns, DO NOT EVER EVER EVER use the lead indicator!! EVER on a turning target!

dont do it, 90% of time it's a bad idea

if you do, dont ever chase a bb

attack around an island or from smoke or if you both are on the collision course

try to attack from the opposite side of the gun direction

when you shot torps or decided to stop, inject your smoke and flee

If you want to do this with success strive for the following:

1. Wait until he's engaged with your allies preferably at 90 degrees from you angle of approach.

2. Fast torps.

3. Watch for enemy dd's in area before you commit to this maneuver, if you do it, you damn well commit, if you half [edited]it, you are dead.

4. Observe where his guns are pointing, don't approach from that side.

5. 4 kms is too long, this is do or die, so kill him outright. Get close.

6. That said, if you are confident you will land all of them (enough to kill) and may have a salvo left, then hold it. The last two (or whatever) is an effective deterrent at their allies coming in to rescue their buddy.

7. It's really done best when they have a full head of steam coming towards you.

8. Secondaries can and will hurt, even when you successfully pull this off - you will take damage. This is good for balance.

Yup, I don't play DDs but I've avoided a fair amount of 'suicide range' torp salvos because it's just too obvious when the DD is dumping torps.

I've also killed my fair share of the ones that try this by queuing up HE and unloading my AP from whatever guns I have trained on him before he gets into 5km range. By the time they get into a guaranteed kill range, my main batteries are back up and have likely been waiting with HE in the barrels, then I just drop a full salvo into them at sub 3 or 4km for an easy kill, sometimes before they can even get the torps in the water. Just have to wait until they commit to a broadside to fire and poof goes the DD.

It's a game, getting close torp kill is exhilarating. If you fail it's not the end of the world.

Getting as close as possible is the key.  Many have already told how to do that.  If a BB is engaged you can quite often get to under 3k or better.  Generally a BB engaged with another BB will be a BB captain that is unsure as to what to do if he does see you coming. Also as you say...it's a rush getting close to a BB when you know you can't miss.  Now I only play low tier Isokaze.  I have no idea how things work in this regard in the high tiers but it's not overly hard to get in close in the lower tiers.

^^ especially at low-mid tiers where repair cost is not an issue. I always try to pull it off in late games where my team is in superior number and enemy DDs are all out, just for show :B

OP, I think you're dropping your torps from too far, 4km is easy to avoid if the BB knows what he's doing. I try to do it at 2-3km max, and then you don't need smoke because boom! I think the key is coming from an angle where his guns are not, and ideally having allies nearby to grab his attention. Then charge in the opposite direction of his guns, trying to outrun the rotation speed as others mentioned, and drop the load at 2-3km.

Obviously at tiers 6-7+ this is a stupid move as players are more experienced, secondaries can do serious damage, and losing a T8 ship can easily result in negative credits.

Situations where they'll pass near an island and you can move towards them.    If they're moving 20 and you're moving 35 it's a closing speed of 55.   If you're chasing him it's a closing speed of 15.

Torp him as you pass by, don't turn in front of him.
