I have heard people say that Langely has better fighters than the Hosho. When? I have fully upgraded Langley fighters, which captains skills and everything and every battle ends like this:

No, the Izokaze isn't using his AA, not that it should matter.

Strafing head on wouldn't work so please do not use it as an excuse.

Most Hosho vs Langley air battles involve me losing all my planes while he limps away with his. How is this possible?

Well, at the start of the war (well, before then, anyway), the Japs had air superiority, as they were the ones that pioneered Carrier-based concepts...

Two things:

First, and foremost, RNGesus hates you.  That's okay.  He hates all of us from time to time.

Second, you neglected to mention/consider the cruiser which sneaks into frame just before the video ends.

Given the poor quality of the video, we can't say definitively that either the cruiser or the Isokaze is using his AA- but neither can we say that they are NOT>

Given the scant evidence available, my money is on the cruiser a/o destroyer pinning your fighters long enough for the Hosho's birds to do their job (and vice-versa).  It really doesn't take much to tip the scales one way or the other.

But to your point, the Langley's fighters ARE superior in both number and quality- but that doesn't mean they always win.

This has to do with game play how?

It has to be a bug, because that is not how it was before.

However, it's super easy to solve on your own anyways.  Just strafe the fighters just before you dogfight them, you will shoot down at least 2 IJN fighters.

That's really strange.  I haven't played a Langley in a while, but the opposite was true before the 0.5.4 patch.

T5 Marblehead has an AA of like 2 lol

They really arnt. The 720p quality video is very easy to see if the guns where fiing (streaks of light)

Regardless of these points you posted. The norm is that my Langley is losing air battles vs Hosho. I do record and watch games. This isn't confirmation bias.

That's not actually true. Hosho fighters are faster, have more HP, and do more damage than the Langley fighters. Langley has more ammo and higher numbers though.

When I played Hosho, my fighters got curb-stomped every time. What did they change? *Goes and checks* Oh. They put A5Ms on Hosho.

For real?

Holy crap, you're right!

It's also interesting to note that Hosho has a 2 tier difference between fighter upgrades (3 vs 5) compared to the Langley's 1 tier difference (3 vs 4)

I was wondering why Langley got that extra DB group.  This might be why.

Here is how everything works on fighters your DPS against their survivability

Not counting Captain upgrades. Langley fighters do 29 DPS with an 820 survivability. Hosho is 35 DPS and 990 Survivability.

Your DPS/Hosho Survivability - 29/990 = 2.9 % chance per plane to shoot down a fighter.or 97.1% chance their fighters survive

Hosho DPS/Langley Survivability - 35/820 = 4.27% chance per plan to shoot down a fighter or 95.73% chance your fighters survive.

Probability of you shooting down a plane every second is 16.2% or 83.8% chance all the IJN planes survive

Probablity of Hosho shooting down a plane every second is 14.6% (including DD 15.75%) or 84.25% chance your planes all survive.

It is extremely close at the start. You get more attacks but they have a better chance to hit on the attacks. Overall normally the Langley wins but who ever shoots down the first plane then has the advantage. Also the DD is firing 11 DPS. It is not much but that is still damage.

Langley Fighters
1 plane - 2.9%

2 planes - 5.72%

3 planes - 8.46%

4 planes - 11.11%

5 planes - 13.7%

Hosho Fighters

1 plane - 4.27%

2 planes - 8.4%

3 planes - 12.3%

Engagement starts at 4 seconds 6 langley vs 4 hosho fighters.

4 seconds - 83.8% hosho fighters survive, 84.25% langely fighters survive (langley advantage)

6 seconds - langley fighter shot down. 86.3% hosho fighters survive, 84.25% langley fighters survive (hosho advantage) 5 langley vs 4 hosho fighters

9 seconds - langley & hosho fighter shot down 88.89% hosho fighters survive, 86.7% langley fighters survive (hosho advantage) 4 langley vs 3 hosho fighters

13 seconds - langley & hosho fighter shot down 91.54% hosho fighters survive, 90.5% langley fighters survive (hosho advantage) 3 langley vs 2 hosho fighters

14 seconds -  langley fighter shot down 94.28% hosho fighters survive, 90.5% langley fighters survive (hosho advantage) 2 langley vs 2 hosho fighters

18 seconds -  langley fighter shot down 97.1% hosho fighters survive, 90.5% langley fighters survive (hosho advantage) 1 langley vs 2 hosho fighters

26 seconds -  langley fighter shot down fight over

Basically at the beginning you had a 0.5% advantage but as soon as you lost that first fighter the Hosho had the advantage for the rest of the battle. BTW had you not been over the DD you would have had a better chance. You fought over an AA DD for 22 seconds eventually they will hit something.

Hope that helps

Strange, playing the Hosho right now and my fighters get swatted out of the sky in 10 seconds flat. At this point try tend to immediately recall them into CA AA fire if their fighters insist on having dogfights.

I haven't played tier IV CVs in a bit, but when I did my Japanese fighter would typically shoot down 1 or 2 US fighters before being wiped out, and occasionally the squad of US fighters would just steam roll me without losing a plane, and these were dogfights, no strafing involved.

My Hosho does fairly well in fighter battles but I lure the enemy fighters over friendly AA. I also have the T4 skill for my fighters giving them more durability.

Yes I like to go seal clubbing n Hosho, it is my favorite ship to do that in.

I've started the long haul up the IJN CV line and I'm currently flogging the Hosho. Only time I've been successful with my fighters vs USN fighters is when I manage a decent strafe run on them and drop a few of them as soon as I engage em. Other than that, I'm just grist for the mill and use them as a diversion for my TBs to slip by.
