So I'll willingly admit that I'm a Warships noob.  I've purchased a couple of premiums because I enjoy converting free exp and they're just really cool ships.  I use real life money because I have it and not time.  I'm about 160 games in and I just cannot seem to put together wins.

I'm an experienced WoT Blitz player and according to the stats websites for that game, I'm a unicum player.  I realize these are vastly different games, I just mention that so you know I'm not a window licker.

Any advice you guys can give me I'll take.  Both of my grandfather's served in the Navy during WW2 (one drove troop transports during the invasion of Normandy beach and the other served on an aircraft carrier) so I've always had a passion for naval ships.  But all this losing isnt fun for me. I had 3 games today where my team just melted away while I was engaged with several ships, no idea how 5-6 ships can be sunk in the first 3 minutes.  What's the key to wins in Random Battles?  I prefer BBs and Cruisers so those tips are most appreciated.  I've watched Baron and Phly on YouTube, I read the forums, trying my best to improve but so far it's not working haha.

If anyone would want to show me the ropes, I'll gladly take the training.  Thanks all.

I would suggest looking at some other channels like Business6 or Flamu, atsf also is worth a look (seemed like mostly entertainment videos but his latest are great guides as well).

Is my hit rate abysmal?  It seems pretty low.  One of my biggest problems I think is not knowing when to play aggressive and when to play passive.  Probably will only come with experience.

Read the guides and watch youtube videos,

.

I suggest starting up a cruiser line as they are "easiest" to play lower tier. I suggest US because it has good ships up to T6.

Those guys can be fun to watch but they're not the most instructive.   I find mid level games the most fun to play personally so I wouldn't worry TOO much about leveling up.   Tier 5+ is where the "real" game is.   The game where torps move at a fast pace and ships begin to differentiate themselves in how they play.   Learning to play a tier 3 battleship well won't tell you much about playing a VI battleship for instance but a V plays with very similar concepts to an VIII.    Take time to play a lot of battles in one particular ship and work on analyzing what went wrong, developing situational awareness, etc.    Things like being able to watch out for torps while seeing what target offers the most potential damage while quickly aiming and firing just simply requires some practice.  Once you learn that the map strategies, etc will come in time.

I like Flamu, business6, wastingsometimegaming, thotgor, for the channels not as many people seem to talk about.  iChase is probably the best and most popular for his instruction videos.  Notser has a lot of replays and they're fun to watch but IMHO you have to kind of know what the person is doing to learn from it whereas iChase covers the Ships 101 type stuff.

Baron and phly may be very entertaining but they are by no means excellent players.

Check out this sub-forum: http://forum.worldofwarships.com/index.php?/forum/123-new-player-guides/

Everything pinned has great value. So do the things not pinned but they're hit and miss.

It is a bit low, the average is in the lower 30's, I think. But a low hit rate could be expected with BBs, practice, practice, practice.

Thanks all for the suggestions, I'll do some reading tonight.  Take for instance my New York stats.  I feel like I play at least decently in that ship, but after 18 battles I have a 22% win rate:( haha

Or a cruiser or most DDs, heck it's even the worse way to dodge torps usually.   Broadside to nothing!  WASD is your friend.

Hit rate as a stat is mostly meaningless.   In a BB for instance I try to fire my gun each time it's off cooldown and ready to be fired and if the only target is a DD 18km away I'll take that shot.   Too much focus on only improving the stat itself leads to passing up opportunities to do damage.

How do you guys choose where to go at the beginning of a match?  Follow your team?

Lord Benjamin I'm the exact same way.  I know my chance of hitting that DD is pretty dang low, but there's at least a chance.

I'm new as well, I started in Feb so I'll tell you what I have learned from my point of view. Aiming will be the first thing that will drive you crazy because each ship has it's own way of shooting like most US cruisers have a higher arc, while others are flatter, you also find strange how shots will have their own type of curve and knowing of course how much to lead a ship. Trust me all this will improve as you play more and more. The best place to start is Co-op their you can hone your ship movement and aiming skills while still getting credits and XP and more times than not your team will not melt away. Once you get the hang of it then do a lower tier PVP and go up as your skills improve. This is what I have done, also don't stick to one ship do all four classes so you get a understanding how all classes play.

For a BB?  My theory is control the centerish area of the at the start of the game.   Pay attention and see how things develop.  Aslains modpack and the minimap mod that shows the last spotted position is SUPER vital to this.    Then after you see a trend develop go where you think it's best.   It's an art, not a science, so you'll have to just make judgement calls and then analyze your own performance afterwards.

Did your presence at the weak flank cause the 6v3 steamroll to be a 7v4 steamroll and your HP and life were wasted?  Did your properly angled armor and threatening firepower cause them to slow down and spend 5-6 minutes destroying you and give your team time to win elsewhere?   You'll have to just kind of learn and adapt as things go by.

In a DD?  Speed to a flank and see what's there.  If they aggressively push try to slow them down while friendlies catch up or win elsewhere, if they turn and run away from torps then go somewhere else instead of chase.

I'm also around that many battles in so I can understand the pain. I have streaks of both kinds:win 5 then lose 8 in a row. I have found it useful to do co-op several times for whatever ship I'm currently grinding, and try to figure out my best angles for firing, using torps and figuring out distances and the other ship's speed to find the best lead time for hitting those soft citadels. Granted, these are just bot ships, but it will give you clues as to where and when to engage. I also have a bad tendency to be overly aggressive and extend myself too much. Watch that you don't do that and try to keep with at least one teammate, if possible. Best of luck and if you wanna divvy up with another semi-noob, feel free to find me ingame. :great:

I'm gonna second LordBenjamin with the control center of the map idea. Especially if you go USN BBs and their slow speed, it's nice to have a central position so you can flex where you're needed if that becomes a thing. Though if it's just you who has the idea while everyone else camps out on some edge there's not much you can do alone.

Good stuff here, and since BBs are much slower it is also understandable if you simply go down the side you spawned, especially on the maps without a middle section to control. Dont waffle in the spawn unless almost everybody is agreeing to play a defensive game (not applicable in domination). Too many times I've seen BBs that spawn on one side try to move to the otherside, essentially swapping positions, and ending up useless in the critical opening segments of battle.

Cruisers... take a little bit of judgement where to go. You probably should stick together with whomever else is on your side. If all your friendlies abandon a side don't push up on your own.

Like a number of people have already said, start with iChase's videos, especially the one on how to aim. It made a world of difference for me in a battleship. I used to not like them, now they're one of my favorite classes because I can hit what I'm shooting at.

Also, the advice about not showing your broadside to a battleship when you're in a cruiser, that is golden. I know sometimes it can't be helped, but the more you can minimize it the better. I know I'll hold my fire if I think a cruiser is about to turn and show his broadside. It's worth waiting for to get the citadels.

......

You are still new to the game.  With such few matches under your belt, your win loss ratio is still largely at the mercy of chance.  Focus more on learning the ships, understanding how to lead, when to angle, memorizing stats etc.  As you become more used to integrating these into your playstyle, you'll find your win rate steadily climbing.

Most importantly though, have a good attitude, treat your fellow players like human beings, and have fun.
