Is there a way to skip a ship as we move up in a category. I do not want to purchase the Pensacola but do not know how to move past it. Please provide step by step if it is possible. Many thanks.

The only way to skip is if you have enough free xp to research the necessary modules on the Pensacola and then research the next ship

Please for the love of god do not skip the Pensacola. That ship is a ship you will need for learning how to play with higher tier ships. It is a nice and gradual transition from just running into the battle and firing your guns at things, to staying at the edge of your range and firing at enemy ships, while learning what to shoot AP and HE at. It is probably the most important ship in the American Cruiser line. Please read this and PM me if you have any other questions about it or need help. http://forum.worldofwarships.com/index.php?/topic/73527-pensacola/

Just DO NOT skip the Pensacola. You will regret it and it will be a waste of Free XP. Hope this helps!

I've ground through Pensacola twice. Once in the Closed Beta and just recently now. The experience was the same both times (partly because I'd ignored USN  CA's for so long since release). Each time I started with the ship I absolutely hated it, and each time by the end of the grind I loved it.

The ship benefits a lot from the various upgrades you can buy for it from the tech tree (especially the improved range and turret traverse speeds), and it teaches you so much about high tier cruiser play. All cruisers tier 7+ (regardless of nationality) are fragile things in a high lethality environment. Staying at range, not making an easy target of yourself and knowing when to run/ when to engage are all essential to higher tier cruiser play and Pensacola teaches these lessons.

In exchange for it's supreme squishiness, Pensacola offers some incredible guns. The hard part is learning how to keep those guns around for more than the first 3 minutes of the match.

That said, if you insist on skipping this ship, or any other, you can do this only with "free XP". Free XP is earned as 5% of the normal XP you make each fight or "converted" from an elited or premium ship at the cost of 1 doubloon per 25 points.

QFT, it is the first heavy cruiser for the Americans and while I disagree about the transistion what you learn from it applies to every CA and it is easier to learn in tier 7 than 8 plus. One thing a lot of players don't seem to learn when making the jump to CA's is their AP can be quite effective against BB's.

You do need to get the upgraded guns as fast as posdible though which also requires the upgraded hull. This is where you should use free experience.

Thanks you all. Will not skip it!

or at least play some games in it, can understand if you want to shorten the nightmare of this ship or that ship! I find playing the ships can be beneficial for learning how to defeat that particular ship so I play all ships at least a little bit!

The nightmare is the first gun/hull combo.

Bad idea skipping ships (ok maybe not with Karlsruhe). All ships teach you something, including Pensacola. It is not a bad ship, and if you have not gone through T5 IJN Cruiser line, you may not have been exposed to handling a CA yet. Very different than handling a CL, and a must-skill to learn, as all higher tier cruisers are CAs.

That said, you can skip by using Free XP to research the ship and required modules/upgrades (the ones with a direct line), but you do not have to spend credits to purchase the ship.

The only lesson taught by Pepsi is "stop playing this crap and go get a real CA".
