the Danish West Indies were formally ceded to the United States by Denmark; thus, becoming the U.S. Virgin Islands, in exchange for twenty-five million dollars. For us locals, this holiday is known as Transfer Day and I still gotta go to work lol. Three ships were present in the Fredericksted Harbor for the transfer ceremony back in 1917. The USS Hancock (AP-3), USS Olympia (C-6) and the Danish Cruiser Valkrien . I was able to find some neat pics to share with you guys. Happy Transfer Day!

Technically, the transfer was made on April 1st 1917 :-x

Edit: It seems that there's a bit of confusion about the exact date. This page says it was on April 1st, this page says it was on 31st March. I'll take the word of a native for the 31st March ;)

Depends what time the transfer was made and from whose viewpoint. Washington DC is an hour behind the Virgin Islands, which is in turn 5 hours behind Copenhagen. Both could be correct.:)

Thanks for the post.  Neat tidbit there!  And by all means, please mark the 100th anniversary next year, too.
