Questions from a semi-new player

I've been watching videos on YouTube in order to get better at this game; and one of the things that I noticed is that players seem to be using addons that improve the gamepaly.

Check out this video:

That player has a much larger minimap than the default one, really awesome looking colored shells, numbers next to his reticles telling him how long it will take his shells to land, and more detailed nameplates over the other players. Are those addons? Or am I missing settings in the options menu that would allow me to enable those features?

Another question I have is about game guides. I'm looking for a website where I can learn about how to get better at this game. I'm trying to figure out which upgrades and captain skills are optimal for various ships (specifically the Admiral Hipper), but I'm having trouble finding that information.

Thanks in advance for any helpful responses.

The larger minimap can be accessed by pressing + (or - for smaller) when in a match.

The detailed interface (time for shells to land, names over ships) can be accessed by checking the "Alternative Battle Interface Mode" box in Settings > Controls.

The shells are from Aslain's mod pack "Colored tracers" IIRC

I would also recommend turning the "Collision Avoidance System" off if you haven't already.

What he said. Most of these things are not mods, they are in the stock game. In fact, I would suggest that you explore the in-game options but avoid installing any mods. As a matter of fact, some mods tweak the visuals/audio, others give unfair advantages and the rest are perfectly useless. Unless you want cosmetic mods, there's no honest reason to install any mods at all.

there are alot of really practical mods that i use, most are in Aslain's mod pack, therees one that shows the effective radius of smoke and rings around the ship in the mini map

Exactly. Unfair advantage. If it wasn't there'd be no point in using them because they are not cosmetic. You sir are a cheater in my eyes.

Instead of turning on the additional player/ship info all the time with the alternate battle interface setting, I press Alt regularly to bring this info up when I need it. It's too cluttered for me to have on all the time.

As others have noted, most of those items are interface selections within the game.  Personally, I would recommend NOT installing any mods.  Use what the developers give you, especially as a new player.  There are also issues with mods causing game stability problems.

As for the best upgrades, although online info may be helpful, I'd recommend you "think" about the ship and how you play it.  Read the descriptions of the upgrades.  Look at complementary captain's skills.  Often, the correct choice will become obvious based on how you intend to play the ship.

Also keep in mind the game is tweaked often.  What was good a few months ago might not be the same today.  About half the advice I've gleaned online was either wrong for my play style or simply out-dated.

The most important mod for me is the extra level of zoom out when in 3rd-person view. I have to set the resolution relatively low to read the info on screen, and as a result, there's less room to display the ship, so making it smaller helps.

I've also noticed a drop in the frequency of collisions with other ships.

Doesn't make any difference when the shells start flying though.

I also use a different sight, less info and thinner lines. I would use nothing but the crosshair if that were possible.

As well, I use a damage counter, just for interest's sake.

Vanilla for life!

What resolution is that? You have so much clear space! (I have to play @ 1368x720 to be able read the OTMs :( )
