captain training: based off ship?

There's something that im a little confused about with the captain xp system. Does the captain receive a flat rate of xp per battle or can an inexperienced captain commanding, say, a Yamato shoot up through the ranks because Yamatos tend to rake in a lot of ship xp.

Im sorry if im not making much sense. basically, if i train a captain in a high tier ship, with they train faster than if they were commanding a lower level ship

Your captain's XP earned is equal to the base XP earned in the match, assuming you are not running premium ship or any flags/signals. As an example, if you 1500 base xp towards ship research, you also earn 1500 captain XP. This does not change regardless of the ship, class or tier you run.

Captains get XP based what is earned in battle, and the amount of XP for the next point goes up over time, so training a captain in a Yamato is technically as fast as a Hashidate, though you will probably do worse in the Hasidate....

The only way to influence XP earned is to use the various flags which modify it and if there are events.

Sure.  Why not?  The problem is that after you're done training the captain, you'll have to respecialize the captain to the lower tier ship.  This is either done with doubloons, or lots of games.

Ah, that reminds me, a friend pointed out that the 50% exp flag doesn't get applied to the commander exp anymore with the latest major patch.

Im pretty sure its off earned XP, was using my atago earlier and got 13kxp off a 9kxp earned game

Edit: I will test tomorrow and see what it is.

Am i wrong in assuming that higher tier ships, by nature, earn more XP because of how much more HPs the ships have? And damage dealt directly influences the amount of XP earned?

I guess this is a game mechanic i never really looked into

It's not just because the higher tier ships have more HP, your ships also deal more damage too.

Capping points can also help a ton too.

My mental process was: bigger HP pool = more damage possible to deal = more base XP = fasted commander leveling

I kind of wish that a dev would break down how the XP system works

some general ideas of how the XP works...

HP% knocked off enemy ship

Sinking a ship

Collecting battle awards (like devastating strike)

Collecting ribbons (like citadel hit)

Capping

Resetting caps

etc.

Out of all those, caps seem to earn most XP

Generally easier to earn more XP in higher tiers, not sure why.

Ok. So its percentage knocked off. That was kind of what i was looking for

Yeah, I tend to bring home quite a bit of exp just by hunting destroyers.

xp also depends on the tier too i believe, so it's mainly depends on the % hp damage to the enemy ships that you did, your capping / denying capping and your tier

is it so? afaik it works but there is a specific flag which doesn't add the ship's xp but adds captain's xp

Ah right, I heard that if a lower tier causes damage to a higher tier ship, they get more exp.  And it's lower in the reverse situation.

Yes, there's a flag that adds captain exp.  I was referring to the other one though.  That one used to have an effect on captain's exp as well.

OP, you are overthinking this. Just work on playing better, no matter what tier you are in. Your goal should be to do between 1x and 2x of your ships HP every game in damage, while staying alive. If you do this consistently (in CA or BB), it will not matter what tier you are playing in, or what tier ships you are shooting. If you are getting this kind of damage output, you should be getting fire/cit/kill ribbons as well just in the course of play.

The next most important thing, for captain XP, is to maximize your caps and cap defends. If you are not running a DD, this means being in a position to assist your DD's as they cap and encounter other DD's. Getting green ribbons is one of the fastest ways to maximize your XP right now, and it invariably is also assisting your team to a win.

Don't be that guy who sits back at max range and snipes for damage all match. Pure damage will give you decent XP, but more often than not you will be hampering your chance to win, and reducing your XP gain.

Also, don't be that guy who rushes to end tier ships before you are ready to play there. Yes, those ships have bigger HP pools, but they face threats that will strip off the HP as fast or faster than anything in low tiers if you are not ready. Tiers 5 and 6 are the sweet spots to run for XP grinding, as well as for creds and skill building. Learn from your mistakes in those tiers before you push on to t8+. The same mistakes you can get away with in t5/6 will get you killed in t8/9/10.

It is working for me.

I just finished a game while retraining my captain in Marblehead, and he started the match with 31,556 xp.  I finished the game with 1,012 base xp, and premium ship modifier increased that to 1,316.  With the +50% captain xp flag, my captain finished the game with 33,378 xp, an increase of 1,822 for the match.

50% of the base xp = 506.  Total xp of 1,316 + 506 = 1,822.
