Worth manual dropping bombs?

Ive gotten ok with TB manual runs, the benefit is obvious.

The autodrop with DBs seems to hit with at least one bomb on CAs and up at least 75% of the time if not more.

Yet Is say about half of my well lined up manual drops will bracket and miss.

Im almost wondering is there "target lock" that happens with auto DBs that are 100% rng, as opposed to torps which are completely "analog".

Can more experienced CV drivers help a brother out

Auto drop = Big area

Manual drop = Controlled smaller area

Yes, it is worth it.

The circle is smaller for manual, but rng mean anything can happen. But on theory you will get better result with manual, unless you mess up too often.

Manual drop definitely gives you a higher number of hits *if* you can predict the ship's movement well enough that the target is entirely within the aim oval when the bombs actually drop.  If the ship turns or changes speed so that a significant part of the ship is outside the aim oval, then manual drop will be substantially worse than auto drop.  All this is "on average" of course -- RNG plays a big role.

Personally,  I usually manual drop on BBs, CVs, and the slower, larger Cruisers, but stick with auto-dropping on smaller, more maneuverable Cruisers and DDs.  My manual drop skills just aren't good enough to consistently "bullseye" the smaller ships unless it's a situation where the ship's movement & future position is more predictable than usual (e.g. stationary after having just run into an island)

More skilled CV players can probably leverage manual drops better than I can, and get better results on smaller ships.

I usually get double the hit rate with a proper manual drop (2-3 hits instead of 1 hit) and usually a higher rate of fires.  Just like the torps, it will require some practice as the ship is moving/turning and the proper approach and lead will vary from ship to ship due to size/speed differences.

Yes manual drop is always better. Although you might miss alot, especially on DDs, you have to keep manual dropping so you can improve.

The only scenario where you might not want to manual drop is when you are dive bombing Tier 10 CVs, since they are so large they cover the whole auto drop area, meaning you have a chance of setting more fires on different parts of the ships, but I have yet to confirm this.

I use the auto-part to get the DB in position, then manual drop. Frustrating part is predicting the ship's next move.

I almost never use manual drops. The ships I tend to face change course and speed as soon as any plane gets near them. Trying to predict where they'll be far enough out (wish we could give the command when the planes are closer) just doesn't work for me. I almost never end up with a target travelling in a straight line or standing still. Against a moving target, manual drops usually mean a miss.

Is there a "training" map you can practice this on? I've constantly went into Co-op battles to work on manual torp and bomb dropping. I would first just like to practice it on non moving ships then on to moving targets.

Depends on the carrier.  For USN CVs, it might not be worth it as you go up tiers because your bomb spreads get huge anyways.  For IJN CVs, there is no excuse: you must manual-drop.

You can still miss with a well-placed manual drop, but the odds are more in your favor.

This is true trouble is I tend to hit with 2-3 bombs on near about everything short of a DD with auto drop. All I have to do is send my Db down the front of a ship and short of him having FT or CL support I will most likely hit him.

In a word

NO

the return on the investment of time and attention is not worth it.  I once manual dropped from an Essex on a CV that didnt start moving until my planes were on him the drop cirlce was perfect dead center. 1 out of 7 bombs.  I have never Manual dropped again.

That wasnt my only time manual dropping and I understand the power of RNGsus however if the bottom threshold for a manual drop is no better than a bow to stern auto then its not worth the extra effort.

That doens't mean you shouldn't manual drop again.  I've had those same issues with manual drop, however they are very infrequent.  With auto drop you will get worse RNG more frequently.

Manual drop can still screw up, but the odds are better, overall, than with the larger regular drop window.

Annoying when it happens though.

Sooo... if you had a choice between buying one of two lottery tickets:

  • one with a cost of $1 that offered a 1:50 chance of winning $10, a 1:500 chance of winning $20, and 1:1000 chance of winning $100

  • one with a cost of $2 that offered a 1:10 chance of winning $10, a 1:100 chance of winning $20, and a 1:200 chance of winning $100.

You would choose the $1 ticket because the "bottom threshold" was "no better" and therefore the $2 ticket was "not worth the extra dollar"?

From my experience Manual Drop has slightly better chance to hit than auto. Manual if I do it just right will normally give me one more hit than if I used Auto. Not much of an improvement if you ask me.
