despite having fewer guns then the other CA's with 8' guns I really like the maneuverability of this ship. The ability to really dodge a lot of incoming fire!

She's absolutely a wonderful ship.

 

...I'm a fan of the Kiev, Kirov (see signature), Aoba, etc., because you can sustain fire from 2/3 of your battery while chasing down your target.

A really nice ship, it just doesn't get the respect it deserved because it's always getting compared to the cleveland. Personally i'd take the aoba over the cleveland anyday, don't really like shell spamming ships.

It also has good AA guns and the T button feature which intensifies them for 40 seconds at a time. I've sunk a few ships with the powerful 10 mile torps too. The only problem is it seems almost every random battle that I'm in with it there are Tier VII and even a Tier VIII ship (Tirpitz) in the battles. Survival is a [edited]. lol

And since she faces off directly against several of the most disgustingly powerful 6" flamethrowers in the game, Aoba is never any more than third best. And in a field of only 4 ships, that's not a good sign.

Aoba is a great little ship in my opinion, especially when compared to the usually harder to play Furutaka from tier 5, her 8 inch guns tend to hit hard if they land, and the torpedoes aren't bad at all.

Not anymore. They got nerfed a few updates ago. They used to have a rating of about 40, now they're down to 30.

Aoba is arguably just as good for setting fires compared to the other t6 cruisers. They have higher ROF but Aoba has much higher fire chance. I personally think it deserves 2nd place under Cleveland, because its AP shells are much more effective and it's more versatile compared to the others.

Aoba is one of those ships that depends a lot on you. If you play her good, she rewards you. If you make a mistake, it hurts a lot. The ship might not shine on her own, but she does through her captain.

 

I think Aoba is my favorite ship (and I don't like Myoko that much) because I only get myself to blame if I do bad. if I do good, then it feels so rewarding.

I feel the same way about DDs. I will admit that I complain about things like radar more than I should but the thing about DDs is that it's all about the captain in high tiers. If you're paying attention to stats sites, DDs as a whole are struggling right now but what gives the impression that they're OP is that the good captains can really wreck the game for a lot of people.

 

Atago is like this too. When that ship first came out they did so poorly but eventually people either got better or gave up and now when you see an Atago you're not so quick to brush it off. Same thing with the German CAs I've played so far. You either rake it in or get hit in the citadel right away.

I love playing the Aoba. While I seem to do quite well in it, my win rate is abysmal. I'm hoping it's just some bad MM and it will all average out soon enough...

  I'm seriously considering using free xp to get through the rest of the 'Taco, and into this.  NOT because I dislike 'Taco- I don't, but just because I REALLY want this one!

 

  Grinding both Taco and Koney atm.   Aoba is looking very attractive, because it's a big, obvious improvement over the Furutaka- which I already like.  Nurnburg is just an incremental improvement over Koney- it's basically the same ship, with minor improvements- just one tier higher.   Plus, I'm having far more fun BLASTING other ships with 8" AP, than I am spamming lots and lots of smaller shells at them. ( I still love my Cleveland, though)  I am eager, to see what German 8" AP will do- just tired of all the small KM guns...

 

  Watching some fool's hp just disappear, because he went broadside to my Furutaka, makes all the painful early games worth it.  ( I'm also hoping that surviving this experience makes the jump to the Pepsi cola easier-I really want to like that ship.)

Aoba is freaking awesome, I will give it that. But for 8 and 9 hipper and roon are hands down the best of the tier. 10 The Zao probably just edges the Hindy but its a fair fight. My personal recommendation would be germany first.

Cruiser, i like my Konisberg but dislike the two turrets on the back and prefer the big 8 inch guns on the Aoba.

I just went through this and have the exact same conclusion. I have had the Cleveland (maxed out) twice, just to make sure I didn't like her. I do enjoy the Aoba, very close to the B hull now. The gun range is very good (almost 15 km) and the arcs are flat.

 

I like the torps, but wonder if I should configure it for torp accel and loose 2 km range (down to 8km) and pick up 5 kts speed.

 

I think I am going for 20% increase of AA effectiveness, as the gun dispersion is low enough that I typically land 5 of 6 shells when I'm trying to.
